What you'll see and do

  1. Saqqara Pyramid

First, your tour guide will pick you up from your requested location to start your journey across the three ancient necropolises. The tour begins with a visit to the Saqqara necropolis and the Pyramid of Djoser. This pyramid is the world's earliest colossal stone building. This structure played a fundamental role in Egyptian history, as improvements to it formed the basis for other pyramids. The pyramids at Giza and elsewhere in the desert near Cairo form part of the legacy of an ancient city and civilisation that declined long before Cairo was founded. This civilisation named this area Memphis, the seat of power during the Old Kingdom (2686–2181 BC) of ancient Egypt and home to the pharaohs who built the pyramids.

  2. Saqqara is one of several notable necropolis sites near Cairo that offer impressive sights and hold great archaeological significance. Saqqara may even hold more interest for archaeologists than Giza. The vast site contains burials dating from before the beginning of the Old Kingdom through to the Greek period of Egyptian history. The most famous structure at Saqqara by far is Djoser’s Step Pyramid. Dating from the 3rd Dynasty, it was the first stone structure of its kind ever built. It also displays an important architectural innovation that would be used in the construction of the Giza Pyramids and other pyramids built during the Fourth Dynasty and later. Djoser’s pyramid was the first to use multiple mastabas (rectangular tomb structures) stacked on top of one another to form a stepped pyramid, setting the stage for the smooth sides of the Giza pyramids and the smaller pyramids of the 5th and 6th dynasties found at Saqqara and other nearby sites, such as Dahshur and Abu Sir.

    45 minutes here

  3. Step Pyramid of Djoser

The oldest stone structure in the world is the Step Pyramid of King Djoser, which dates back to 2670 BC. The pyramid forms part of a huge complex comprising a colonnaded entrance, a Sed festival complex, an enclosure wall, north and south pavilions, a southern tomb and thousands of tombs. With your expert tour guide, you will learn a great deal more about King Djoser, his talented architect Imhotep, and the latest discoveries in Saqqara. (Please note that a special ticket is required to enter the pyramid or the southern tomb. Your guide will be happy to assist.)

  4. Pyramids of Dahshour

After lunch, the tour continues with a visit to the pyramids of Dahshur, specifically the Red and Bent pyramids. These pyramids represent a significant development for the ancient Egyptians, as they marked the transition from building step-sided pyramids to smooth-sided ones. There are multiple pyramids at Dahshur, but the Red and Bent pyramids are the most famous and are among the oldest, largest and best preserved in Egypt. They were built between 2613 and 2589 BC. (The time spent at each place is flexible according to customer preference.)

45 minutes here · Admission not included

  5. Also known as the North Pyramid, it is considered to be the first classic pyramid built in ancient Egyptian history. We call it the Red Pyramid because of its reddish limestone, which was quarried from the Tura Mountains in Cairo. There is a possibility to enter the pyramid for free! A unique example of early pyramid development in Egypt, it was the second pyramid built by Sneferu and is considered the only pyramid in Egypt that still has its outer layer intact and is in good condition. You will have the chance to enter this pyramid as well; it is open inside now. (Please do not enter if you are claustrophobic or have any health problems, as it is very challenging and you must be fit.)

  6. Bent Pyramid

This is a unique example of early pyramid development in Egypt. It was the second pyramid built by Sneferu and is considered the only pyramid in Egypt that still has its outer layer and is in good condition. You will have the chance to enter this pyramid, which is now open inside. (Please do not enter if you are claustrophobic or have any health problems.) This pyramid is very challenging and you must be fit.

45 minutes here · Admission not included

  7. Memphis and Sakkara

Then, the tour continues with a visit to Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt. This city is home to the colossal statue of Ramses II, the Great Alabaster Sphinx, and numerous ruins. Memphis was the centre of power during the Old Kingdom (c. 2686 BC) of ancient Egypt and was home to the pharaohs who built the pyramids.

30 minutes here · Admission not included

  8. Mit Rahina Museum

A special museum for the famous statue of King Ramesses the Great, who ruled in 1279 BC. This huge limestone statue is in amazing condition. Ramesses the Great ruled the Egyptian Empire for around 67 years.

30 minutes here · Admission not included

  9. The Sphinx of Memphis

The Sphinx of Memphis is a stone sphinx located near the remains of the ancient Egyptian city of Memphis. Made from Egyptian alabaster, the statue is still in very good condition and may represent the famous Queen Hatshepsut (1479 BC). Then you will start your journey back to your hotel.

Saqarra and Memphis tour

If you need to grasp the full historical context of the Egyptian Pharoahs, and Kings, from the ancient era then please make that reservation with the number one Egyptologist Aly Elsheemy. My wife and I booked this tour with Aly who came to pick us up from our hotel in downtown Cairo. Thank you to Yehia, who expertly and carefully drove us to the museums in Saqqara and Memphis. This tour captures the full scope of the historical facts pertaining to Imhotep, the step pyramid of Djoser, the many tombs that were unearthed, and the ongoing excavations that continue today. You will not be dissapointed with this tour, as Aly will take you back in time and meticulously explain every detail of the family, lifestyle, culture, their habits, work, education, and entertainment. You will travel through time with Aly, who will provide all the historical information, trace the storyline, and make it engaging. Just do it... purchase the tour, and you will definitely yearn for more.

Pyramid tour

What a brilliant day from start to finish .We were met on time by Aly Elsheemy, our guide and Yehia, our professional driver. At all times they were friendly, courteous, professional & very knowledgeable. If there is anything you want to know about Egypt’s pyramids & history, Aly Elsheemy is your man. In Saqqara we were introduced to the first of many pyramids and tombs . We entered some of the tombs and saw walls covered with beautiful illustrations of daily life and hieroglyphics. We were appreciative of Aly’s knowledge in explaining them. Leaving Saqqara, we went on to Dahshur and was introduced to each of the 5 pyramids …the Red pyramid, the Black pyramid, the White pyramid, The Bent pyramid & the Pyramid built for the wife of the pharaoh. Each one had a story to tell. This part of the day we learnt about the history of the earliest stone built pyramids. We then moved on to Memphis, the old capital of Egypt where the lower and upper kingdoms meet . Here we were introduced to statues of Ramases II and an enormous structure of a Sphinx. By this time our knowledge of ancient Egypt had increased enormously and after nearly seven hours Yehia & Aly took us to a loverly restaurant where we had a truly enjoyable Egyptian meal and view of the pyramids. In addition Aly was a great photographer and we have some great shots of ourselves ! This was a MAGNIFICENT tour which we would undoubtedly fully RECOMMEND to anyone.

Pyramids off the beaten path

Aly Elsheemy was our excellent guide. Our driver, even though we didn’t get to talk to him, was very good. We were picked up on time from our hotel in Giza and then driven to Saqqara where we were taken around the archeological sites and we went into the Unas pyramid which was amazing inside! We did not enter the Step Pyramid due to the necessary extra cost! We were then taken to a place which showed us how Egyptian rugs (carpets) are made (which was amazing) and then we had the option to buy. We were not pressurised to buy anything. We then visited Dahshur where we entered the amazing Bent pyramid (which has been our favourite of five) and the Red pyramid, too. We then visited the open air museum at Memphis. We are now on our way for lunch at 2.20pm (we were given a snack to eat earlier). We have had a really good experience, particularly experiencing everyday life from being driven around. Thank you very much to perfectly educated Egyptologist Aly Elsheemy from Egypt in Tours and our driver! 💯 RECOMMENDED!

Wonderful solo tours near Cairo

I used Aly Elsheemy from Egypt in Tours for three trips during my time in Egypt. He guides both small groups and solo travelers to locations in and around Cairo. My trips were the following: • Saqqara – this was the ideal solo/small group tour, capitalizing on his knowledge as an Egyptologist and knowledge/contacts at the site. Normal tours to this site do not cover it in the depth and detail that I was able to enjoy. We were able to get into sites not generally available to the public and also to quickly focus in on the public sites most in line with my interests. • Fayoum/Valley of the Whales – another incredible tour to an area where whale fossils from 35-45 million years ago have been found. The advantage of taking this trip solo was not as much the content of the trip, but as a solo traveler with this guide, we were able to avoid being “caravaned” with other tourists. This would have slowed our trip immensely! • Coptic Cairo and Bazaar – a solo tour, which not only covered the normal Coptic churches and mosques, but also the Walls of Cairo and a few other religious sites not normally part of the general group tours. The visit to the bazaar, which is somewhat of a tourist trap, was adapted to my preferences, which primarily focused on photography of various ancient religious buildings and interesting shops in the market. In short, I endorse Egypt in Tours strongly as a tour leader for solo tours. Although I did not participate as part of a group tour under his leadership, I anticipate his knowledge of the sites and methods to explore and explain them would translate well to that type of forum. His prices are reasonable, especially for the quality he provides.

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Cairo.

How much does Memphis, Saqqara, Dahshur Pyramids & Tombs in a Private Day Tour cost?

+

Prices start at $30 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Cairo usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Memphis, Saqqara, Dahshur Pyramids & Tombs in a Private Day Tour take?

+

Plan for about 6 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Cairo is not rushed.

Is Memphis, Saqqara, Dahshur Pyramids & Tombs in a Private Day Tour worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 74 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 40 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Cairo, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Memphis, Saqqara, Dahshur Pyramids & Tombs in a Private Day Tour?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Memphis, Saqqara, Dahshur Pyramids & Tombs in a Private Day Tour suitable for kids and families?

How far in advance should I book Memphis, Saqqara, Dahshur Pyramids & Tombs in a Private Day Tour?

+

Around 14 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Cairo can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Cairo and add a light layer if any part of the 6-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Memphis, Saqqara, Dahshur Pyramids & Tombs in a Private Day Tour start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Cairo within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Cairo?

+

On Outty we rank every Cairo experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include All-in-One Giza Tour, inside Pyramid, sphinx, Camel ride & lunch, VIP Private Giza Pyramids, Sphinx Tour –Inside the Pyramids&More, Giza Pyramids all inclusive,Sphinx, lunch,Camel, insid pyramid. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Cairo?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Cairo?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
