Skip the guesswork and let a passionate local host take you through Melbourne's food scene on this 3-hour food tour, running every day. Your guide handpicks 4 to 6 tastings on the day based on what's seasonal and right for your group, so no two tours are quite the same. The route takes you through the cultural heart of Melbourne's CBD: a stop in Chinatown for dumplings and dim sum, through the city's famous laneways, and into the Hosier Lane street art precinct. Finish with a sweet treat near Federation Square. This is a genuinely small group, capped at 12 guests, so you get real time with your guide rather than a script. Past guests consistently praise how much their guide tailors the tour to the group. Come hungry: these tastings are built to replace a full meal. You'll also leave with insider recommendations for the rest of your stay.

    Well worth it!

Simon was an outstanding guide. We were the only two on the tour, so he basically customized the tour for us. He was extremely knowledgeable. The food tasting was unique, but also what the locals would enjoy, which we appreciated. Pace was good, saw different areas and types of restaurants.

    Simon says “Try this!”

Our guide Simon was insightful and pleasant as he walked us around town. Evening wasn’t too cold especially since we ducked into many establishments to have our next bite. Great variety of food although more on the Asian side of things. Recommend to others as long as the weather is not too inclement.

    A perfect Friday night walk!

Melbourne Nite Bites tour sounded just our kind of thing. We booked last minute and it turned out we were the only people on the tour that evening! We met Hugo at the meeting point in the rain but he quickly moved us into the laneways and under cover. A brief chat about what kind of food we liked and Hugo was leading us to the first venue, an amazing Thai place in a food court that served fantasic, authentic dishes. Hugo was very knowledgable about the food scene in Melbourne and where the best 'off the grid' places were. Moving from the Thai, Hugo led us through some laneways, pointing out street art and bars as we went. Next up was an Oyster bar in Chinatown. Undoubtedly the freshest and tastiest oysters I have ever had! We then had a Chinese spiced beef pancake from a small outlet on one of the main roads. We have probably wlaked past it so many times but never stopped to try it! That has definitely changed now!! The final food stop was a Malaysian outlet for satay amd roti! Both were freshly made as we watched and were perfect. The last stop of the night was a cocktail bar tucked away well out of sight of the main paths. Hugo feared it would be fully booked so called ahead. They were!! BUT a quick call to a contact by Hugo and we were assured a seat. This is a place I will never forget...... hidden away behind a mirrored door at the end of a small hallway, you literally enter something from the 1920's! Dark colours, lots of polished wood, more candles than I could count and a Jazz vibe made the bar seem cosy and welcoming. We sat on a wonderful sofa and took in the experience! The cocktails were perfect and Hugo used this stop to give us a map with the palaces we visited on it as well as recommendations for other hidden treasures! We live about an hour out of Melbourne so will definitley be back for another tour in the next few months. Thank you Hugo for an amazing night.

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Melbourne.

How much does Melbourne: Progressive Day/Night Food Tour - Chinatown & Laneways cost?

    +

Prices start at $70 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Melbourne usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Melbourne: Progressive Day/Night Food Tour - Chinatown & Laneways take?

    +

Plan for about 3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Melbourne is not rushed.

Is Melbourne: Progressive Day/Night Food Tour - Chinatown & Laneways worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 76 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 66 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Melbourne, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Melbourne: Progressive Day/Night Food Tour - Chinatown & Laneways?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Melbourne: Progressive Day/Night Food Tour - Chinatown & Laneways suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Melbourne: Progressive Day/Night Food Tour - Chinatown & Laneways?

    +

Around 23 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Melbourne can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Melbourne and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

What are the best things to do in Melbourne?

    +

The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Melbourne?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Melbourne?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
