What you'll see and do

1. Tokyo Station Marunouchi Ekimae Hiroba

   Your friendly English-speaking guide will meet you at your hotel in central Tokyo in the morning. (If your hotel is located outside our designated pick-up area, we may still be able to arrange a pick-up for an additional charge.) Together, you will travel by subway or local train to Tokyo Station to board Japan's world-famous Shinkansen (bullet train). Sit back, relax, and enjoy the smooth, comfortable ride. After approximately 90 minutes, you will arrive in Ueda, a historic castle town in Nagano Prefecture, host prefecture of the 1998 Winter Olympics. Along the way, enjoy ever-changing views of the Japanese countryside, including rice fields, orchards, charming villages, and, in winter, the snow-capped peaks of the Japanese Alps. Your Shinkansen journey is not just transportation—it is an unforgettable part of your experience and a perfect introduction to rural Japan.

2. Ueda

   After arriving at Ueda Station, your guide will arrange a private vehicle (typically a minivan) and drive you to Matsumoto Castle, a journey of approximately one hour. Along the way, enjoy the peaceful rural scenery of Nagano, with its picturesque countryside, farmland, and mountain views.

3. Matsumoto Castle

   Built in the late 16th century, Matsumoto Castle is widely regarded as one of Japan's most beautiful and best-preserved original castles. It has been designated a National Treasure and is one of only five castles in Japan to hold this prestigious status. Its striking six-story wooden keep, with black lacquered walls contrasted by white plaster, creates a breathtaking reflection in the surrounding moat, making it one of Japan's most iconic and photogenic landmarks. As you explore the castle, your guide will share its fascinating history, unique architecture, and the important role it played during Japan's feudal era.

4. Daio Wasabi Farm

   Azumino, located just north of Matsumoto, is renowned for its pristine natural environment and extensive wasabi cultivation. Around 90% of the wasabi produced in Nagano Prefecture comes from this region, thanks to its abundant supply of pure, cold spring water. At Daio Wasabi Farm, one of Japan's largest and most famous wasabi farms, you will learn how authentic Japanese wasabi is cultivated using traditional methods. You will also have the opportunity to sample a variety of wasabi-flavored foods and snacks, from freshly grated wasabi to unique local specialties. As you stroll through the farm, admire the crystal-clear streams and ponds that nourish the wasabi fields, along with charming traditional wooden watermills and picturesque rural scenery that make this one of Nagano's most beloved attractions. You can also enjoy a unique Japanese-style lunch at the farm. (Lunch is optional)

5. Bessho Onsen is one of Japan's oldest hot spring towns, with a history spanning more than 1,400 years. Often referred to as the oldest hot spring resort in the region, it is renowned for its peaceful atmosphere, traditional ryokan inns, and historic Buddhist temples featuring beautiful wooden architecture. If time permits, we will also visit Bessho Onsen, where you can stroll through its charming streets and experience the timeless atmosphere of rural Japan. Please note: A visit to Bessho Onsen is optional and is subject to the tour schedule.

6. Ueda Station Tourist Information Center

   At around 4:30 p.m., you will board the Shinkansen (bullet train) for the return journey to Tokyo. Sit back, relax, and enjoy another comfortable 90-minute ride through the scenic Japanese countryside. Upon arrival at Tokyo Station, your guide will accompany you back to your hotel by subway or JR train, bringing your memorable journey to a close.
