Dyer Island Cruises operates around the world-famous Dyer Island where you might be fortunate enough to see the Marine Big 5: Southern Right / Humpback / Bryde’s Whales, Great White Sharks around the renowned Shark Alley, Cape Fur Seals, the endangered African Penguin and various visiting dolphin species. The are is also home to a variety of seabirds. Our Southern Right Whale Season is normally from June – December, but for the rest of the year we occasionally see Humpback and Bryde’s whales in the area. We have an on-board Marine biologist and experienced crew who promise and educational, life-changing experience. Upon arrival at the Great White House, coffee/tea and muffins are served while listening to a dedicated safety and conservation briefing. We provide safety jackets and wet weather gear. After a short walk to the harbour we board custom deigned vessel, Dream Catcher and the adventure will commence. After the trip on sea, guests return to the Great White House for soup and bread followed by a debriefing. Quality trip footage can be bought, and you will receive a downloadable link. A free visit to the African Penguin and Seabirds Sanctuary is also included. African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary
The African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary (APSS) serves as a custom-designed, world class, marine bird rehabilitation centre in the Overstrand area. We provide temporary rehabilitative care to diseased, displaced, injured, oiled and abandoned marine birds with special focus on the endangered African Penguin. Marine bird rescue, rehabilitation and release form part of the conservation management plan to conserve and maintain African Penguin populations, and other seabirds. Through continued research, education and awareness programmes, we aim to mitigate human impacts on our colonies

Great marine excursion.
The operators are very good at organizing and conducting the boat exploration. We saw the backs of whales, penguins floating on the water, seals, dolphins, and a few sharks by the shark boat. The workers onboard were extremely helpful and kind. The water was very rough and the boat is fairly small so if someone has motion sickness or balance issues they would need to take medicine and be very careful moving around. I would recommend this trip because you do see a lot of marine life.

Great tour but it had its positives and negatives.
We did get to see the Big 5 which was wonderful. We came up on a super pod of dolphins and they allow you plenty of time to watch and to take photos. It was very well organized and efficient. Now for the downside. We went to the penguin sanctuary and we did get to see 1 penguin, we saw 1 whale, and we saw 1 shark. I was glad to see everything but the guide was VERY difficult to hear. She was so quiet that no one could understand her. The only thing we did hear were her assistants telling us which side of the boat to go to, to see the marine life. The lunch was a 1 at best. They served a cup of soup and a roll. The soup was horrible (absolutely no flavor) and the roll was fine (the birds really enjoy their portions as well. That lunch left all of us hungry and wanting to stop on the way home at a gas station for lunch.

Inspiring and unique
Participating in a real conservation program while encountering wildlife is so unique! Our guides were super friendly and always happy to tell us everything they knew about wildlife conservation. This 2 hour trip left a huge impression on our 8 year old son and we hope it will inspire him for his future, as it once did for us. Ecological and ethical organization
Definitely the best marine trip organisation. The only one with such an scientific, ecological and active role to support all species. Everything perfectly organised to a point exceeding all expectations.

Didn’t do enough research
Pay attention to whale season. If it isn’t whale season you aren’t going to see whales. It’s a 2.5 hour bus ride from Cape Town one way. The water has an average tide of 2.3 meters so if your easily sea sick this isn’t for you. Staff was nice, if it were what season this would be totally worth it. But I didn’t see the value if it isn’t whale season!
