What you'll see and do
Dharavi
Asia's largest slum, Dharavi, lies on prime property right in the middle of India's financial capital, Mumbai (Bombay). It is home to more than a million people. Many are second-generation residents, whose parents moved in years ago. In a city where house rents are among the highest in the world, Dharavi provides a cheap and affordable option to those who move to Mumbai to earn their living. Daily wages here can be as low as 185 rupees ($4/£2.20) per day. As Dharavi is located between Mumbai's two main suburban rail lines, most people find it convenient for work. Dharavi also has a large number of thriving small-scale industries that produce embroidered garments, export quality leather goods, pottery, plastic and many more. Most of these products are made in tiny manufacturing units spread across the slum and are sold in domestic as well as international markets. The annual turnover of business here is estimated to be more than $650m (£350m) a year. The state government has plans to redevelop Dharavi and transform it into a modern township, complete with proper housing and shopping complexes, hospitals and schools.

Make sure you do this!
We visited the slum today with our guide, Rahul! What a fantastic experience. We went on a private tour with our teenage children and Rahul showed us so many different aspects of the slum (industry, residential, commercial, healthcare etc). Rahul lives in the slum and gave us real insights into how it functions and operates. I think you expect to see dirt and poverty; but what you dont expect is the way people are so accepting of their circumstances, how they live so simply yet happily; how entreaupreanial they are and how much money/industry exists within the slum. Worth the visit! Make sure you use this company...they were great to deal with in terms of communicating and organisation!
Response from the operator: Dear Sonal, Thank you so much for sharing such a thoughtful and meaningful review. We’re truly honored that you chose to experience the Dharavi Slum Tour with us and that Rahul could guide you and your teenage children through such an insightful visit. We’re glad the tour helped you see the many layers of the community from industry and commerce to residential life and healthcare and provided genuine insights from someone who lives there. Your reflections on resilience, simplicity, entrepreneurship, and the strong sense of community beautifully capture what makes this experience so impactful. Thank you as well for your kind words about our communication and organization. It means a great deal to our entire team. We’d also like to share that your booking directly supports our NGO, Young Cares Foundation, which works within the Dharavi community to support education, welfare, and development initiatives. By choosing this tour, you are helping give back to the people you met. Thank you for your strong recommendation, and we hope to welcome you again in the future. Warm regards, Young Tours and Travel

A Unique & Educational Experience
Our guide, Bharti was fabulous. She had lived in this slum all of her life and her children were 5th generation. She took us on a fascinating tour which included sections where plastic was recycled, where soap was made, pottery produced and garments were dyed and created. We were fortunate enough to meet her lovely children, father and other members of her family. Bharti had perfect English and it was a tour we will never forget. I can't recommend her highly enough!
Response from the operator: Dear Donna, Thank you so much for sharing such a meaningful and heartfelt review. We are truly honored to hear that your experience with Bharti was so memorable. Her deep personal connection to the community, combined with her excellent English and knowledge, allows guests to gain a genuine and respectful understanding of life in Dharavi. We’re glad you enjoyed learning about the recycling units, soap making, pottery, and garment production, and that meeting her family made the experience even more special. Reviews like yours remind us why responsible and community-based tourism is so important. We deeply appreciate you choosing Young Tours and Travel. Please know that your booking directly supports our NGO, Young Cares Foundation, which works for education, empowerment, and community development in Dharavi. Thank you for helping us give back to the community you visited. We truly value your recommendation and hope to welcome you again in the future. Warm regards, Young Tours and Travel

Mayur’s in depth knowledge of the community, industry, commercial strengths and residences in addition being able to navigate in a way which built the experience and stories. Why this scores 81
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Life In Dharavi: A Guided Tour Of Dharavi Slum: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Mumbai.
How much does Life In Dharavi: A Guided Tour Of Dharavi Slum cost?
+
Prices start at $44 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Mumbai usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Life In Dharavi: A Guided Tour Of Dharavi Slum take?
+
Plan for about 4 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Mumbai is not rushed.
Is Life In Dharavi: A Guided Tour Of Dharavi Slum worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 81 out of 100, which we label "Exceptional". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 100 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Mumbai, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Life In Dharavi: A Guided Tour Of Dharavi Slum?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Life In Dharavi: A Guided Tour Of Dharavi Slum suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 4-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Life In Dharavi: A Guided Tour Of Dharavi Slum?
+
Around 35 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Mumbai can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Mumbai and add a light layer if any part of the 4-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Life In Dharavi: A Guided Tour Of Dharavi Slum start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Mumbai within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Mumbai?
+
On Outty we rank every Mumbai experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Elephanta Caves & Island Guided Private Tour, Dharavi Slum Tour, Mumbai: Dharavi Slum & Dhobi Ghat Laundry Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Mumbai?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Mumbai?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
