Close your eyes and imagine the Algarve: the scent of the sea, the vibrant colours of the fish market, the aroma of garlic sizzling in olive oil and laughter around a shared table. Our experience takes you beyond a cooking class and into the heart of Algarve culture. Meet the people behind our ingredients, discover the stories of Portuguese cuisine and learn to prepare Seafood Cataplana, one of the region's most treasured dishes. As the Cataplana cooks, its wonderful aromas fill our kitchen. A glass of Algarve wine, freshly prepared food and new friendships await around our shared table. And our secret ingredient? Connection. The connection between food and tradition, between locals and travellers, and between strangers who arrive from different corners of the world and leave with shared memories. At The Kitchen, we believe the most memorable experiences aren't just about what you eat. They're about the people you meet, the stories you share and the way a place makes you feel.

Such a beautiful experience. The food is phenomenal. Joanna and her mom are such a joy. My wife and I were paired with two other couples we didn't know and by the end we were all friends. So worth your time. Fun to go to the market and learn from the locals. Make sure you check these guys out

Response from the operator: Dear Drew, thank you so much for visiting The Kitchen in Lagos and for another beautiful review! ❤️ My mother and I absolutely loved having you and your wife with us! Knowing that you arrived not knowing the other two couples, who were already friends, and that everyone ended up sharing stories, laughter and wonderful moments around our table makes us incredibly happy. That's exactly what The Kitchen is all about — bringing people together through food, wine and authentic Portuguese experiences! Thank you for being part of it and for bringing such wonderful energy to our kitchen! Best wishes, Joana Glória

Lagos fish market, a killer cataplana, and a mother-daughter duo you'll want to adopt

Jo and her amazing mother run this experience like they're welcoming old friends into the family kitchen, and by the end, that's exactly what we were. The fish market tour in Lagos was worth the price of admission on its own. Joanna knows everyone, and everyone knows her, which meant we got the inside scoop on what's freshest off the boats, how to spot a truly great catch, and meeting the knowledgeable seafood vendors. Then came the cooking class. We sliced, stirred, and layered our way into a cataplana that tasted like it came from a restaurant with a two-month waiting list. Joanna's mom guided us with the quiet confidence that only comes from decades of doing it right (and gently correcting the rest of us when we didn't). The wine flowed generously and was excellent, which may explain why our group bonded so quickly. Strangers at the start, fast friends by lunch, trading stories and toasts around the table. We left with a full belly, new recipes, some new friends, and all about what a proper cataplana should taste like. Highly recommended, whether you're a seasoned cook or someone who burns water. Book it, show up hungry, and don't skip the wine. Obrigado, Joanna and family.

Response from the operator: WOW! 😂❤️ My mother and I were laughing out loud reading your review! This might just be the funniest (and sweetest!) review we've ever received! We're now seriously considering adopting you into our family! 😂❤️ You captured exactly what we love most about The Kitchen in Lagos — the market, the fresh seafood, the cooking, the wine, and especially the magic of turning strangers into friends around our table. And that cataplana with a two-month restaurant waiting list? We're definitely stealing that compliment! 😂 Thank you for visiting The Kitchen in Lagos and for bringing such wonderful energy to our kitchen. My mother and I absolutely loved having you with us! You're officially part of The Kitchen family now, so next time you're in Lagos, you know where to find us! Muito obrigada, from both of us! ❤️🇵🇹🍷 Best wishes, Joana Glória

    Intimate and Friendly

Very authentic experience, Joanna is a great host! Really appreciated the run down the market an the tips and tricks for selecting Portuguese specielties

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your lovely feedback! I’m truly happy to hear that you found the experience authentic and that you enjoyed the market tour and the tips and tricks for choosing Portuguese specialties. For me, an experience becomes truly special when the class itself is great, but also when we’re able to help guests have wonderful experiences beyond The Kitchen. So it really means a lot to know that the local recommendations and insights were valuable to you. It was a pleasure hosting you, and I hope to welcome you back to The Kitchen for another experience in the future! Warm regards, Joana G.

Lagos Market Tour & Seafood Cataplana Cooking Class: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Lagos.

How much does Lagos Market Tour & Seafood Cataplana Cooking Class cost?

    +

Prices start at $171 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Lagos usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Lagos Market Tour & Seafood Cataplana Cooking Class take?

    +

Plan for about 3.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Lagos is not rushed.

Is Lagos Market Tour & Seafood Cataplana Cooking Class worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 67 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 19 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most popular in Lagos, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Lagos Market Tour & Seafood Cataplana Cooking Class?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Lagos Market Tour & Seafood Cataplana Cooking Class suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Lagos Market Tour & Seafood Cataplana Cooking Class?

    +

Around 7 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Lagos can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Lagos and add a light layer if any part of the 3.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Lagos Market Tour & Seafood Cataplana Cooking Class start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Lagos within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Lagos?

    +

On Outty we rank every Lagos experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Small-Group Kayak Tour: Magic of Ponta da Piedade, Lagos, From Lagos: Kayak Tour of Ponta da Piedade Caves by Boat, Boat trip to the grottos at Ponta da Piedade, Lagos. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Lagos?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Lagos?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
