Guided Japanese whisky tasting in Kyoto run by an English-speaking certified whisky expert. The tasting: Enjoy a curated selection of 5 Japanese single malts in this friendly, interactive experience. Each tasting is limited to 4 participants, giving you plenty of opportunity to ask anything you want to know about Japanese whisky. Tastings last for approximately 90 minutes and are held at a small bar north of Nijo Station. It’s an area slightly off the normal tourist trail, but is easily accessible by public transport. A good opportunity to see a part of Kyoto you might not visit otherwise! Tastings are only held when the bar is closed, so there will be no random bar customers wandering through. About me: I’m half-Japanese, born and raised in Australia, but have called Kyoto home since 2012. I have a Whisky Expert qualification from the Japan Whisky Research Centre, and am just a general all-round whisky obsessive. Be warned, I can happily talk about whisky all day!

Delve into Japanese whiskies without the time needed to go to remote parts of Japan
Japanese whisky distilleries have so much to offer, but are really hard to fit in to a trip. Greg (Australian/Japanese) does an amazing job of bringing together a curated list of whiskeys that explore the space of Japanese whisky, history and distilling info included. He clearly wants to share his love of Japanese whisky experiences. He is also extremely knowledgeable about all the distilleries and the area. He gave great recommendations for three rest of our trip. I'd recommend trying to fit this in early on in your Japanese trip if you can (but it's good any time)
Response from the operator: Thank you so much for the review! It was so nice to meet you both, and I do hope that if you come to Japan again someday, you'll have better luck visiting some distilleries (if only at least some of them were a little easier to get to!). Thanks again, I hope you have a great time on the rest of your trip! - Greg

A great tie off Japanese whisky from a friendly guide
We had a wonderful time learning about and treating real Japanese whisky. We initially tried to book a distillery tour at Yamazaki distillery for Suntory but shouldn't get a reservation. I'm so glad, though, because we wouldn't have discovered this excellent experience if we had. Greg was a terrific guide and we learned so much from him. This was a great value for money, especially if you want to try both some older distilleries and some of the newer ones. Definitely ask about recommendations for whisky bars in Kyoto after your tasting experience.
Response from the operator: Thank you for the review! I'm sorry you didn't manage to get into Yamazaki, but I'm glad I got to meet you both as a result! I'm so happy that you enjoyed the whiskies, and that you got to try some interesting drams later on at the bar I recommended. Thanks again, and enjoy the rest of your time in Japan! - Greg

Very knowledgeable with great selection
My husband and I had a fantastic time tasting a suite of Japanese whiskeys here. Greg is a great host and taught us the ins and outs of the Japanese whiskey business. He heard what kinds of whiskeys we’ve enjoyed in the past, recommended several for us to try, and gave us advice on where to find some rarer bottles we were looking for.
Response from the operator: Thank you so much for the review! It was nice to meet you, and I'm so glad you enjoyed the whiskies! Thanks again! - Greg

Highlight of our trip
Greg is an amazing host with a vast amount of whisky experience. We are pretty novice when it comes to whisky, and he managed to meet us on our level. We had an unforgettable evening and wish Greg all the best of luck with his new location!
Response from the operator: Thank you so much for the kind words, and I'm sorry for the late reply! It was so nice to meet you both, and I hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in Japan. Take care! - Greg

A Kyoto Whisky Experience Worth Savoring
My son, nephew, and I had a fantastic time with Greg during our Kyoto whisky tasting experience. What stood out most wasn’t just the whisky itself, but Greg’s knowledge, passion, and ability to create a relaxed and engaging atmosphere. He introduced us to several Japanese whiskies we likely would never have discovered on our own, and some of them ended up being among the best spirits we’ve tasted during our trip to Japan. The tasting felt personal rather than scripted. We enjoyed learning about the history, production methods, regional differences, and unique characteristics that make Japanese whisky so respected around the world. Greg was incredibly approachable, answered every question we had, and made the experience enjoyable whether you’re a seasoned whisky enthusiast or just beginning to explore Japanese whisky. Beyond the drinks, the conversation and hospitality made the afternoon memorable. It felt less like a tour and more like spending time with a knowledgeable friend who genuinely loves sharing Japanese whisky with others. If you’re visiting Kyoto and have any interest in whisky, I highly recommend this experience. It was one of the highlights of our time in the city. Thank you again, Greg, for a wonderful afternoon. Wishing you continued success with your new location later this year—we have no doubt it will be a great success.
Response from the operator: Thank you so much for the kind words! It was great meeting all of you! I'm so glad you enjoyed the whisky, and I hope you'll find some more great Japanese whisky on the rest of your trip (and back home of course!). Take care! - Greg

Kyoto: Curated Japanese Whisky Tasting: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Kyoto.
How much does Kyoto: Curated Japanese Whisky Tasting cost?
+
Prices start at $96 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Kyoto usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Kyoto: Curated Japanese Whisky Tasting take?
+
Plan for about 1.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Kyoto is not rushed.
Is Kyoto: Curated Japanese Whisky Tasting worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 65 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 13 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Kyoto, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Kyoto: Curated Japanese Whisky Tasting?

Is Kyoto: Curated Japanese Whisky Tasting suitable for kids and families?
+

How far in advance should I book Kyoto: Curated Japanese Whisky Tasting?
+
Around 5 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Kyoto can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Kyoto and add a light layer if any part of the 1.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Kyoto: Curated Japanese Whisky Tasting start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Kyoto within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Kyoto?
+
On Outty we rank every Kyoto experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Kyoto Ghost Tour: Dark Tales, Urban Legends, Bamboo Forest Night, Kyoto : Chopsticks Making Workshop with Engraving Option in Gion, Kyoto: Gion Hidden Gems & Geisha Culture Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Kyoto?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Kyoto?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
