What you get

    About this experience

Take a guided tour from Kutaisi to explore the hidden gems of the Imereti region. Visit the Katskhi Pillar, a 40-meter-high limestone monolith with a church on top. The next stop will be the mining town of Chiatura, once number 1 in manganese mining, and was renowned for its unique Soviet-era cable car system, which was installed in the 1950s to transport miners and residents up and down the steep hillsides. Believe it or not, until today cable cars are one of the main means of public transport for the locals. The old cable cars were changed to the new ones, but you will see some of the old cable cars, aka "flying coffins" hanging on the abandoned lines. You will take a ride on a new Chiatura gondola lift and feel like a local for some time. You will spot Soviet monuments and mosaics scattered around Chiatura, and also see typical soviet residential buildings. After a walk in Chiatura, continue to the Mghvimevi convent, which is carved in rock. In the evening return to Kutaisi.

There is rarely a chance to go up, as monk is living there permanently, even his brothers only communicate with him by bring food and with the help of the rope. You can take breathtaking photos of the pillar on the way or from the parking lot. However, there is a church and monastery on the ground level. So it is not a very long visit, but definitely worth it.

The Perfect Way to Explore Chiatura & Katskhi Pillar

We had an amazing experience with this tour! We were the only two guests that day, but our guide Ana still gave us a fantastic private tour. She drove us to all the beautiful sights, including Chiatura and the Katskhi Pillar, and shared many interesting facts and stories along the way. Ana was incredibly kind, patient, and thoughtful. She always made sure we were comfortable, gave us enough time at every stop, and answered all of our questions with enthusiasm. We never felt rushed and could really enjoy every location. Her friendly personality and passion for her work made this tour very special. We highly recommend this tour, especially with Ana as your guide. Thank you for making our day in Georgia so memorable!

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Kutaisi.

How much does Kutaisi: Chiatura Cable Cars & Katskhi Pillar Guided Tour cost?

    +

Prices start at $59 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Kutaisi usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Kutaisi: Chiatura Cable Cars & Katskhi Pillar Guided Tour take?

    +

Plan for about 5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Kutaisi is not rushed.

Is Kutaisi: Chiatura Cable Cars & Katskhi Pillar Guided Tour worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 65 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 13 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Kutaisi, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Kutaisi: Chiatura Cable Cars & Katskhi Pillar Guided Tour?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Kutaisi: Chiatura Cable Cars & Katskhi Pillar Guided Tour suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Kutaisi: Chiatura Cable Cars & Katskhi Pillar Guided Tour?

    +

Around 5 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Kutaisi can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Kutaisi and add a light layer if any part of the 5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Kutaisi: Chiatura Cable Cars & Katskhi Pillar Guided Tour start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Kutaisi within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Kutaisi?

    +

On Outty we rank every Kutaisi experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include CANYONS & CAVE Tour from Kutaisi - Okatse, Martvili & Prometheus, Kutaisi:Chiatura Tour with Katskhi Pillar & Cable Car Experience, From Kutaisi: Martvili & Okatse Canyons & Cave Guided Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Kutaisi?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Kutaisi?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
