    What you'll see and do

    1. Prince Shopping Plaza in Karuizawa is one of Japan’s largest outlet shopping malls, offering a huge range of fashion and other goods to the public at wholesale factory prices. The mix of shops on offer is somewhat eclectic too. Big name brands such as Adidas, Coach and Disney sit alongside local fashion labels, handmade goods and souvenir stores. There’s also no shortage of food and drink options too, with Chinese, European and Japanese restaurant options joining the obligatory coffee shops, delis and cafes. Tourists will also be glad to know that many of the stores in Prince Shopping Plaza allow tax free shopping and accept all major credit cards. Paying by credit card can sometimes be problematic in what is still very much a cash-based society here in Japan. The Plaza also has an onsite currency exchange making it easy to get hold of Japanese yen if you need to.

    2. Old Karuizawa Main Street

Whilst the Prince Shopping Plaza offers the very best in modern conveniences, maybe you’re looking for something a little more 'old school' and authentic? If that’s the case, then you need look no further than Old Karuizawa Ginza Shopping Street. Whilst much of Karuizawa has undergone a certain level of renewal and urbanization in recent times, the Ginza Shopping Street has, thankfully, remained unspoiled. Indeed the street continues to enjoy international recognition to this day, thanks to the vote of confidence it received from The Beatles’ John Lennon, when he visited it during one of his many trips to Japan alongside his partner Yoko Ono. However, you don’t need to be one of the all-time legends of popular music to enjoy this charming little area. Among the handicraft shops, various other homemade goods and local fashion stores, you will also find some great little cafes, where you can sit back, relax and “imagine” a world of possibilities.

    3. Tombo no Yu

The healing and health-boosting qualities of the legendary 'onsen' (hot springs) are known all across Japan. Hoshino Onsen Tombo-no-Yu in Naka-Karuizawa is a relatively new addition to this legend, with these springs only being used by the locals since 1916. However, their hydrogen carbonate and chloride enthused waters are said to help alleviate a whole range of human ills, from arthritis to headaches, to nerves and anxiety. In any case, as this writer will testify, nothing refreshes both the body and the spirit quite like a good long soak in an onsen. Tombo-no-Yu offers both indoor and outdoor baths, with admission JPY1300 for adults and JPY750 for children.

    4. Kumoba Pond

Located nearby the Old Ginza area of town and around 20-minutes walk from Karuizawa Station, Kumoba Pond is one of the best spots in town to enjoy the autumn leaves. On a clear and calm day, Kumoba Pond offers a striking mirroring effect when the surrounding greenery is reflected in the pond’s clear and unspoiled waters. The entire pond is also encircled with a boardwalk, making this the perfect place to enjoy a peaceful summer stroll, or perhaps pull up a chair and take some time out from the stresses and strains of daily life. The pond is also popular with cyclists and nature lovers. If you’re lucky, one of the families of ducks who call the lake their home may even come over to say hello.

    5. Church Street Karuizawa

History of Karuizawa Kogen Church Since the arrival of Canadian missionary Alexander Croft Shaw in 1886, Christianity has taken root in Karuizawa, and faith has been nurtured in various churches. Karuizawa Kogen Church was founded in 1921 (Taisho 10) as the "Artistic Liberal Education Workshop." Leading cultural figures of the time, including Kanzo Uchimura, Hakushu Kitahara, and Toson Shimazaki, gathered there and passionately discussed the pursuit of a "truly rich heart." And from the Liberal Arts Education Workshop, a philosophy emerged: "Playing is good, and playing is also learning." In an era when modesty was demanded in all things, the Liberal Arts Education Workshop was a space where people could express what they felt as they felt it and freely discuss it. Kanzo Uchimura, who loved this space dearly, named it "Hoshino Yugakudo" (Hoshino Play School). And the philosophy of the Liberal Arts Education Workshop has been passed down in this place.

    Fantastic day tour

Great experience being walked around all the locations and taking photos for us, he had great English skills and was very kind and interactive with the children too. He was able to provide a bit of background information about all the sites too. We really enjoyed the special experience and got to see more then we could have navigating the day on our own.

Save your money and book elsewhere - no guiding here, only a driver

This description is inaccurate. You are hiring a driver, not a guide. Our driver got us from Kyoto to Nara and back. Do not expect any more from this booking. Tour operator extremely unresponsive to challenges we raised with this mis-description. Our driver did not guide us. He had been in Japan for less than a year, provided no verbal information about the sites and had not visited multiple locations we noted to visit (meaning he couldn’t find the entrance or where to park, which made us arrive after the temple closed). He clearly had not seen the itinerary we put together and my friends and I spent most of our day on our phones googling how to get around and answers to our questions about the sites we visited. There was no guiding, only driving. We had one day and I regret using it with this company. Spend your money elsewhere.

Wrll planned tour and very friendly and patient guide

The tour itinerary was very well planned, with enough time to cover all the major sites. Our guide, Sankalpa, was extremely patient, friendly, and flexible. He also takes excellent photos and is knowledgeable about the sites! Thank you for giving my family and me a memorable experience in Kyoto. Highly recommended!

Karuizawa Day Tour from Tokyo by Car English Speaking Driver/Guid: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Tokyo.

How much does Karuizawa Day Tour from Tokyo by Car English Speaking Driver/Guid cost?

    +

Prices start at ¥93,000 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Tokyo usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Karuizawa Day Tour from Tokyo by Car English Speaking Driver/Guid take?

    +

Plan for about 12 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Tokyo is not rushed.

Is Karuizawa Day Tour from Tokyo by Car English Speaking Driver/Guid worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 43 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (3.7/5 across 13 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Tokyo, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Karuizawa Day Tour from Tokyo by Car English Speaking Driver/Guid?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Karuizawa Day Tour from Tokyo by Car English Speaking Driver/Guid suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 12-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Karuizawa Day Tour from Tokyo by Car English Speaking Driver/Guid?

    +

Around 5 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Tokyo can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Tokyo and add a light layer if any part of the 12-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Karuizawa Day Tour from Tokyo by Car English Speaking Driver/Guid start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Tokyo within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Tokyo?

    +

Tokyo is less a city than a stack of neighborhoods with completely different opening hours. A guided food crawl through Shinjuku's Omoide Yokocho gets you past the no-tourist curtains, while the day trips west to Hakone and Fuji need an early start to be worth the fare. Our ranking weighs guide quality heavily here, because in Tokyo the guide is the product. On Outty we rank every Tokyo experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Best of Shinjuku: Izakaya Food Tour (3-4 Stops, 14+ Tastings), Matcha Making Class in Tokyo with Authentic Japanese Sweets Set, Tokyo: Asakusa Senso-ji Temple & Old Town Walking Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Tokyo?

    +

Late March to May for blossom, October to November for clear Fuji views. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Tokyo?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
