What you get

    About this experience

Meet Apollo, a 41 foot ribcraft purpose built for the ultimate adventure, and the newest member of the Hawaiian Adventures Team. Apollo’s 12.5 meter hull creates a soft, smooth ride to explore the magic of the Kona coast. Triple outboard motors allow for increased safety on the water while also giving the vessel the ability to be quick and nimble. This way, we’ll be able to travel further and spend more time slowed with wildlife. An open viewing platform also means expansive views, and comfortable forward facing saddle seats ensure each guest gets their own space– never having to worry about being positioned the wrong way when we’re on scene with wildlife. Allow Apollo, named after the Greek god of the sun, to illuminate the beauty of the Kona coast while fostering the true spirit of adventure.

    What you'll see and do

    1. Honokohau Marina & Small Boat Harbor

Kona is the ultimate whale and wildlife destination. Kona’s calm waters, deep coastlines, and variety of marine life make the region a world-class wildlife location. Our tours leave out of Honokohau Harbor, which has access to both near-shore and pelagic zones. Exploring the near-shore zone, you have the opportunity to see humpbacks during the winter months, spinner dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, manta rays, and flying fish. With a US Coast Guard offshore certification, Hawaiian Adventures Kona can also reach the pelagic zone- something very few tours do. The pelagic zone expands the search into waters thousands of feet deep to look for pilot whales, beaked whales, sperm whales, spotted dolphins, whale sharks, and more! Hawaiian Adventures’ tour durations allow for a greater search range, more time with whales, and more wildlife encounters on every tour!

    We found whales!

A great morning on the water. We headed out looking for pelagic whales and were able to find short finned pilot whales! Lots of them, males and females along with a nursery group! The baby entertained us with a few tail slaps, some vocalization, and visiting multiple females as well. We spent time looking for other species without luck, so we focused on the scenic coast and history of the area instead. A great trip and first time seeing this species for me

Response from the operator: We're so glad you enjoyed our awesome encounter with short-finned pilot whales! This year-round species is incredibly charming and curious, and we always love seeing littles in the mix. We're happy to hear you enjoyed the whales and the beautiful Kona Coast scenery on our tour. Mahalo!

    Great day of whale watching!

Absolutely a 5 star experience!! Naturalist Pam and Captain Shane gave us such a great day of whale watching. We did the fast boat and have no regrets. They are in communication with other boats in the water so they knew where to be to see the whales and dolphins. 10/10 I recommend!

Response from the operator: Our Adventure Whale Watch is a great option for those looking for onboard comfort, padded seating, open-viewing, and faster speeds! We appreciate your kind words about our crew, as they work hard to make every tour a memorable and fun experience. Mahalo for joining us!

    Unforgettable experience!

Must book!! Great whale watch with Shane and Pam at Hawaii Adventures! We were blessed with seeing spinner dolphins and humpbacks breaching AND jumping! They were very knowledgeable about the area and the animals.

Response from the operator: Mahalo for joining our Adventure Whale Watch Tour! Our boat Apollo offers a comfortable ride, and with fast speed, we have an expanded search range. It was great seeing lots of surface-active whales and a big pod of Hawaiian spinner dolphins. Our team appreciates your review!

    The Whale watch was awesome.

The Whale watch was awesome. We saw about 7 whales including a Mom, her baby and their male escort. We saw a juvenile whale and two whale ride up close to the boat which I think was a rare sighting. Amy and Dennis our driver and guide were awesome.

Response from the operator: Our hardworking team appreciates the shoutout! Captain Amy has years of experience on the water and Dennis is incredibly knowledgable about Kona's whales and dolphins. It was great spending time with a humpback mom, calf, and escort trio, reminding us of the reason for the season. When the whales claim control and their curiosity takes over, we shut down our engines and embrace those special moments. Mahalo!

Kailua-Kona Adventure Whale Watch: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Big Island of Hawaii.

How much does Kailua-Kona Adventure Whale Watch cost?

    +

Prices start at $119 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Big Island of Hawaii usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Kailua-Kona Adventure Whale Watch take?

    +

Plan for about 2.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Big Island of Hawaii is not rushed.

Is Kailua-Kona Adventure Whale Watch worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 65 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 10 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Big Island of Hawaii, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Kailua-Kona Adventure Whale Watch?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Kailua-Kona Adventure Whale Watch suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 2.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Kailua-Kona Adventure Whale Watch?

    +

Around 4 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Big Island of Hawaii can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Big Island of Hawaii and add a light layer if any part of the 2.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Kailua-Kona Adventure Whale Watch start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Big Island of Hawaii within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Big Island of Hawaii?

    +

The Big Island is volcano country: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park tours, Mauna Kea summit stargazing, night manta ray snorkels off Kona, Waipio Valley lookouts and coffee farm visits. Summit tours have real altitude rules, so we weight safety detail. On Outty we rank every Big Island of Hawaii experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include KONA Manta Ray Night Snorkel - FREE re-ride if no Sightings, Big Island in a Day: Volcanoes Waterfalls Sightseeing and History, Big Island: Captain Cook Snorkel On A Power Catamaran With Lunch. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Big Island of Hawaii?

    +

April to October, though the island runs year round. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Big Island of Hawaii?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
