For the usual price, I offer a deep interest and knowledge of the tour subject, a personal approach, an interesting interpretation and a little something extra. 2024 will be the 100th anniversary of the death of Franz Kafka, one of the most important writers of the 20th century and a world-famous Prague resident. On the occasion of this anniversary, I would like to offer you a walking tour in Kafka's footsteps. Because "Franz Kafka was Prague and Prague was Franz Kafka". Come with me to explore this deep and intimate connection between the man and the city.

We enter the world of Franz Kafka, an important writer of the 20th century and a famous Prague native, at the place where he was born in 1883. The house where Franz Kafka was born has long since been demolished, but Kafka's birth is commemorated by a RELIEF by KAREL HLADIK on the façade of No. 3. This is where we will start our tour.

Kafka spent part of his childhood in the HOUSE AT THE MINUTE in the Old Town and experienced many formative events that influenced his life and writing. It was here that he first went to school and where his sisters were born. ..... The Renaissance sgraffito on the façade of the house and the stone lion symbol are distinctive features of the house.

It was in the HOUSE OF THE THREE KING in Celetná Street that Franz Kafka first had his own room with a desk, where he made his first literary attempts. It was here that he lived during his adolescence, here that he lived as a student at the nearby university, here that he experienced his first sexual adventures, but also the tumultuous national riots between Czechs and Germans.

Kinsky Palace
At the end of the 19th century, the KINSKY PALACE housed the K. K. STATE GERMAN LANGUAGE SECONDARY SCHOOL IN PRAGUE, where Franz Kafka was a student and received his school-leaving certificate. Interestingly, the Kinský Palace was also for a time the seat of a shop run by his father, Hermann Kafka.

The Old-New Synagogue
At the time of Kafka's childhood and youth, the site of the former Jewish quarter, the Jewish ghetto if you like, was undergoing a fundamental transformation. The old houses of the poor were being demolished and replaced by new luxury apartment blocks. Only a few buildings remain from the original ghetto, including the famous Gothic OLD NEW SYNAGOGUE. Our meeting point is easy to find. Franz Kafka Square is very close to the famous Old Town Square. House number 3 has a commemorative relief of Franz Kafka on its façade. I will be waiting for you underneath it.

Our tour ends at Cafe Louvre, Národní třída 22, on the border between the historic Old Town and the New Town of Prague. There is a tram and metro stop nearby, or you can take a taxi, uber, etc. It's also easy to get around the city centre on foot.

Guide did not show
The guide never came. I stood there with another couple for over an hour waiting. They called the provider, who apologised but gave no reason for not telling us about the cancellation.

Guide not at meeting point.
We arrived at the departure point in good time, and could not find the tour. There was someone else there who also could not find them. We tried going to the next places on the itinerary to find them, but they were not there. The number on the website to contact the tour operator did not work. We called Viator who tried to contact them, and also they were unable to reach the tour operator. We are now hoping for a refund, but a very poor experience.

“Essentials of Franz Kafka's Prague” a tour with Radek.
Today Radek was my guide on the tour “Essentials of Franz Kafka's Prague”. To be honest, although for many years I’ve been curious about Kafka and his life and writing before today, I knew very little about it. After this tour, I feel I have a good sense of what Kafka's life in Prague was like, who his family and nearest friends were and how they might have affected him as a person and as a writer. Also, I had hoped for an introduction to the old Prague and I can only say, this tour did that too. I very much enjoyed how Radek had hand-picked quotes from Kafka's writing often where Kafka commented on the different locations we stopped at. Moreover, Radek showed pictures of how the buildings looked then, as opposed to what was in front of us today. After this tour, I not only feel very informed about the person and the writer Franz Kafka, I also feel I have a better understanding of what old Prague looked and felt like back then. Thank you to Radek for a very informative morning and for letting me in on the essentials of the Prague of Franz Kafka. Radek is generous, knowledgeable and kind. I highly recommend his tour.

What an interesting tour :). We got to know Franz Kafka not only as a writer but also as a person. We learned a lot, the guide was friendly, the tour was fun. We ended the tour in Café Louvre, Kafka's favourite café. Excellent. Thanks and highly recommended 🙂
