Then, we visit Chancellor House, where Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo established their first black-owned law firm. Our walk continues to Newtown, visiting the Workers Museum for insights into the city's migrant labor history, then the Market Theatre with its rich cultural and street art history. A Really Good Day Walking in Downtown Jozi
Be aware that the description of this tour on Viator is misleading. It states that as part of the tour we would get great city views from the top of a skyscraper and also that we would enjoy a South African braai (BBQ) lunch. Neither of these were true. However, despite these two disappointments, we enjoyed the tour very much. Our guide was amazing. He was very knowledgeable and we learned a great deal from him. All in all, we had a very good day exploring downtown Jozi!
Response from the operator: Thank you, Martin. We’re really glad that despite these concerns, you still had a great day exploring Johannesburg and enjoyed the experience with our guide. Unfortunately, rooftop access is no longer available due to circumstances beyond our control, and we apologise that this had not yet been updated. We’d also like to clarify that a braai lunch has never been advertised or included in this tour, so we’re unsure where this information came from. Thank you again for joining us and for your feedback! - One Day Africa Team

This is a can’t miss experience. The tour covers downtown Johannesburg and you learn the rich history of the city in an engaging way. Refiloe is one of the best guides you could ask for on a history tour. Not only is he unbelievably knowledgeable, he makes the stories so entertaining. He also added some fun bonus experiences!
Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We’re delighted to hear that you enjoyed discovering Johannesburg’s rich history with Refilwe. He has a special way of bringing the city’s stories to life, and we’ll be sure to share your kind words with him. Thank you for recommending this experience so highly!

A walking tour truly worth going on.
This is an excellent walking tour. It is definitely worth experiencing. Mulalo our tour guide has a wealth of knowledge and showed us a lot of places with much historical background to it. This gave us a better understanding of the CBD area. Mulalo was also very friendly personable and easy to talk to and answered all questions. We certainly enjoyed the tour and would highly recommend it. Thank you Mulalo.

Johannesburg City Centre Walking Tour: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Johannesburg.
How much does Johannesburg City Centre Walking Tour cost?
+
Prices start at $643 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Johannesburg usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Johannesburg City Centre Walking Tour take?
+
Plan for about 3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Johannesburg is not rushed.
Is Johannesburg City Centre Walking Tour worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 75 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 91 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Johannesburg, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Johannesburg City Centre Walking Tour?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Johannesburg City Centre Walking Tour suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Johannesburg City Centre Walking Tour?
+
Around 32 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Johannesburg can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Johannesburg and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Johannesburg City Centre Walking Tour start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Johannesburg within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Johannesburg?
+
On Outty we rank every Johannesburg experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Full Day Ultimate Pilanesberg National Park Safari from Johannesburg or Pretoria, Soweto and Johannesburg Exclusive Full Day Guided Tour, Half Guided Day Tour of Soweto And Apartheid Museum. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Johannesburg?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Johannesburg?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
