Your focus for this 3-hour history tour will be the main sites of Berlin’s 19th and 20th century Jewish history and the districts of Spandauer Vorstadt and Scheunenviertel (known as the ‘Barn Quarter’) in Berlin-Mitte. Take in the graceful avenue Oranienburger Straße, where the magnificent New Synagoge was erected in 1866. Learn not only of the conflicts between German Jews and Non-Jews but of tensions between the mostly assimilated German Jewry and the so-called Eastern Jews (‘Ostjuden’) who filled Berlin in the 1920s after fleeing anti-Jewish violence in their homelands.

Stiftung Neue Synagoge Berlin - Centrum Judaicum
The New Synagoge's grand architecture symbolized and celebrated Jewish assimilation in Germany in the 19th century. It is thus one of the most moving sites on our walk. Today it is home to the Jewish community reviving in Berlin,

The school building, located at Auguststraße 11-13, is historical monument built by architect Alexander Beer, characterised by the New Objectivity style. Knowledgeable and forthright academic tour
Outstanding academic overview of local Jewish history. Martin was wonderfully honest and knowledgeable. We saw sites and buildings related to Berlin's past Jewish population that we cou never have known. Remarkable to hear Jewish history interpreted by a German native and academic. Very forthright presentation.

Excellent tour of Jewish history in Berlin
This was an outstanding tour of Jewish history in Berlin. Our guide, Ronan, was extremely knowledgeable and informative. He shared fascinating stories going back in history to the Jewish people’s arrival in Berlin until the present day. And of course we saw many places we wouldn’t have recognized as vital to Jewish history in Berlin. Lots of opportunity to ask questions. I strongly recommend this tour.
