Hummingbird Birdwatching Encounter - Half Day

Wonderful, entertaining and relaxing experience.

There were so many hummingbirds and a lot of species. We found it very easy to film them. They are so beautiful and the tiny ones are so cute. The gardens are lovely and very peaceful. We found this very relaxing after the noise of the city. If you like birds, this tour is a winner!

Amazing views of mischievous hummingbirds

We loved it! Beautiful atmosphere, we saw 10 species of hummingbirds, Hector was a great driver and a great guide, highly recommended, and it is definitely worth the trip

A must do for photographers

My sister and I did the hummingbird observatory tour with Andes Eco Tours. We were picked up at our hotel at 09h00. The observatory is high up in the Andes mountains about 1,5 hour drive northeast of Bogota. After about 45 min drive, we turned onto a gravel road winding up the mountain. This stretch of the road was very bad, extremely bumpy, with potholes and sharp hairpin bends. People with back and neck problems should take note of this. I have neck problems and I had previous lower back surgery and I was concerned. I half-stood most of the time, to take the shocks on my legs in stead of my back. But I must say, it was worth it. The hummingbird observatory is a must do for bird lovers and photographers. There are different feeding spots and there are chairs and benches where you could just sit and watch the birds coming and going continuously. It was the best spot in Colombia to photograph these small, very fast birds. We had three hours at the observatory and the time flew by. We had an English-speaking guide who showed us the different species of hummingbirds and other birds which could be seen there, in a bird book and then he gave us time to watch and photograph the birds while he hovered in the background to answer any questions we might have. It was a most enjoyable and relaxing morning and I will definitely recommend it to anyone wishing to photograph humming birds. I was also surprised to receive some photos by e-mail a few weeks later that the guide had taken of us at the observatory. Five stars to Andes Eco Tours.

Nice tour to see hummingbirds from Bogotá

The observatory is small, but we still saw lots of hummingbirds and even a couple of other species. Our guide was very informative. I’d recommend this as a good way to experience some of Colombia’s amazing biodiversity close to Bogotá. Unfortunately the transportation was not so comfortable on the bumpy road, fitting 3 adults in the single back seat of a mid-size SUV.

Response from the operator: Hello and thank you for your review. We are happy that you enjoyed the Hummingbird Observatory visit. It is indeed a small place full of charecter and birds! The vehicle we use is a 4x4 Mitsubishi Outlander that fits seven people and has 3 rows of seats. On your tour, the driver and the guide were seated in the front of the vehicle and 3 clients in the middle seat, so 5 people in total. The back row with two empty chairs was completely open and available for anyone to use and neither the driver nor the guide remember anyone asking for more space or expressing discomfort during the bumpy road (precisely the reason why we use AWD vehicles). We advise future clients to speak up about any discomfort during the tour because we want our visitors to have the best possible experience and there is unfortunately nothing we can do after the fact if we are not informed of the situation while is happening. We do offer private tours as well for clients that require extra space and do not wish to share the transport but it does come at an extra cost. On this occasion we felt like a 7 passenger SUV for 5 people should have allowed for enough space for everyone to comfortably experience the 1.5 hour mountain ride. We appreciate you sharing your concerns with us and hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in Colombia.

Lovely but not preferable to a park tour or a hike.

This was a very nice tour but not ultimately worth the opportunity cost—the hummingbirds were beautiful but with cost and travel time, compared to the other tours and outings I planned, it would have been better to spend the day on one of the park and hiking tours to spot birds and wildlife!
