Hue Imperial City (The Citadel)
Famously being one of Vietnam’s seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Imperial City of Hue has long been a must-see attraction for tourists visiting a hidden charm of Vietnam. The Imperial City of Hue was actually a walled fortress and palace belonged to the ancient city of Hue which was a capital city of the Nguyen Dynasty for 140 years date back from 1805 until 1945. The grandeur architecture was planned to be built in 1803 by Gia Long – an emperor who founded the Nguyen Dynasty. During 27 years from 1805 to 1832, the Imperial City of Hue was finally completed under the reign of Minh Mang, making it the most massive structure being built in the history of modern Vietnam involving thousands of workers, millions cubic meters of rock and huge volume of burden workload. It locates on the northern bank of Huong River, turning South with total land area of 520 ha. The place was made UNESCO Site in 1993 with the remained buildings being actively restored and preserved after the destruction from the Vietnam War.

Tomb of Khai Dinh
Despite being the smallest, Khai Dinh Tomb is the most recent and costly amongst other Nguyen royal tombs. Khai Dinh chose to build his tomb by modern materials like concrete, slates and wrought iron, hence its appearance is quite gray and imposing. At first, the main building brings about a strong Western feel, however, the landscape was arranged to reflect traditional perceptions: a balanced combination between wood, land, water and plants. Overall, it’s an emerging rectangular structure with 127 steps, leaning against the mountain. The side walls are formed by the biggest sculptures of dragons in all over Vietnam. After climbing upstairs, tourists can first see the house of epitaph. The statues of madarines court (including madarines, horses, soldiers...) are placed at the courtyard. The most notable place in Khai Dinh Tomb is Thien Dinh Palace, which contains bronze statues and steles of the King. Walls are densely decorated and inlaid with elaborate glass and porcelain designs. The most highlighted feature of this room is the intricate painting on the ceiling, illustrating nine dragons amidst fleeting clouds. Inside the tomb, there are two statues modelled the King: the one on the throne was sculptured in Paris in 1920 by Ducuing and Barbedienne.

Most enjoyable day trip into Hue's history
One of the best tours we took. Our guide was Fi. Her English is excellent and her knowledge of Vietnamese history is impressive. She was also very personable and well spoken. Highly recommend Fi as your next guide.

Very poor guide and service
Guide was hopeless. No commentary or introduction of the places we visited was given to us- a group of 5 . The morning started by pick up being late because they did not check that I had already booked and paid online via Tripadvisor and I had to call at 8.10am when I was told that pick up would be at 8 am. They then quickly arranged for pick up at 8.30 am making the excuse that pick up would be between 8- 8.30 am in any event but made a comment that they did not realise I had booked and paid. So I dread to think what would have happened if I did not follow up with a phone call when they were running late. During the phone call, I remembered asking the tour operator which guide I would be getting as I wanted one who could speak English and could explain and answer questions. He said he did not know as he had several tours running simultaneously. Despite that, we went along happily . The whole purpose of signing up for such a tour were the excellent reviews Tripadvisor had on them . We could have gone to the sites ourselves but we wanted to get some local knowledge and insights of the historical sights of Hue. Alas, this was not to be. The most that the guide did was to volunteer to take our pictures. We felt like fools walking around and trying to eavesdrop into other guide's commentaries to other groups which we felt were fascinating and entertaining and secretly wished that our guide could have been more actively involved. His English was very limited and he could hardly understand our queries . Even basic questions about the history of Hue dumbfounded him and he had to resort to asking another guide for answers . Clearly, he did not do any homework for this assignment and he showed no interest in the history of the sites we were visiting. To add the final insult to injury, they had initially picked us up to join the tour but for our journey back , the driver refused to turn into the road where my hotel was situated and dropped us off on the main road , instructing us to walk in to the hotel ourselves ; this was after an extremely hot and humid weary day of walking and climbing up and down the steep steps of the tomb visit sites and was definitely not appreciated. The other members of my group ( whom I had just met on the day itself in the tour ) also agreed that this was a very poorly run tour. It would do the guide a service if the tour operators actually made a point in educating their guides in the history of Hue and the sights which they are to be guiding. The monies we paid I felt was a total rip off for this tour . Also I have learnt the hard way to be wary of excellent reviews - it really depends on the guide assigned . For me this tour was a disaster.

Why this scores 70
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Hue Discovery Full Day Deluxe Small Group City Tour: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Hue.
How much does Hue Discovery Full Day Deluxe Small Group City Tour cost?
+
Prices start at $55 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Hue usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Hue Discovery Full Day Deluxe Small Group City Tour take?
+
Plan for about 8 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Hue is not rushed.
Is Hue Discovery Full Day Deluxe Small Group City Tour worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 70 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.8/5 across 18 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Hue, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Hue Discovery Full Day Deluxe Small Group City Tour?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Hue Discovery Full Day Deluxe Small Group City Tour suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 8-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Hue Discovery Full Day Deluxe Small Group City Tour?
+
Around 6 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Hue can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Hue and add a light layer if any part of the 8-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Hue Discovery Full Day Deluxe Small Group City Tour start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Hue within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Hue?
+
On Outty we rank every Hue experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Hue: Imperial City Walk, Motorbike Tour & Private Car Options, Hue city Deluxe Group Tour (Daily Tour-12 pax max), Hai Van Pass Motorbike Private Tour with Mister T Easy Rider. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Hue?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Hue?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
