Sid Grauman was a showman who loved to entertain. He had this theater constructed in 1927. As you can tell, he took his presentation seriously, creating one of Hollywood’s most extravagant buildings. He even went to the lengths of gaining the government’s approval to import Chinese materials to complete the project. In 1923, Wilcox’s original church was knocked down to make room for the 150-foot Guaranty Building you see today. It holds the status of being Hollywood’s first high-rise, but it certainly lacks the glamor of its neighbors. That’s because it was constructed as a simple office space.
