About this experience
This isn’t just a food tour — it’s a local journey through the heart (and stomach!) of Hoi An. What makes my experience different is the genuine connection to the local culture, people, and flavors. I’m not only guiding you to taste amazing dishes, but also sharing the stories behind each bite — from secret family recipes to the history hidden in a bowl of noodles. We don’t just visit popular tourist spots — we walk the backstreets, eat at authentic family-run eateries, and enjoy meals just like the locals do: sitting on small stools, laughing, and sharing stories. Highlights include: • Visiting a Bánh Mì shop once praised by Anthony Bourdain • Tasting Cao Lầu, a noodle dish that can only be made in Hoi An • Hands-on spring roll rolling and real insight into Vietnamese food traditions • Ending the tour at a peaceful café with Vietnamese coffee, juice, or smoothies. Let’s eat, explore, and enjoy together! ***Note: Let us know if you are on a special diet, like Vegan or Gluten

What you'll see and do
Hoi An
At our first stop, you’ll step into a bustling local eatery tucked near the riverside, where the sounds of sizzling batter and smoky grilled pork fill the air. You’ll watch local chefs prepare bánh xèo (Vietnamese savory pancakes) right in front of you — golden and crispy, filled with shrimp, pork, and bean sprouts. You’ll also get to taste juicy grilled pork skewers (thịt nướng) fresh off the grill, and wrap your own gỏi cuốn (fresh spring rolls) using rice paper, herbs, and vegetables. Don’t worry — I’ll guide you step-by-step! It’s a fun, hands-on food experience where you’ll eat like a local and learn how these dishes reflect Vietnam’s balance of texture, flavor, and freshness.

At this stop, you’ll visit one of Hoi An’s most famous bánh mì shops — a place that has gained international attention. In fact, world-renowned chef Anthony Bourdain visited this very shop and called the bánh mì here a must-try! As we arrive, you’ll see baguettes being toasted to golden perfection, the smell of fresh herbs and grilled meat filling the air. You’ll get to choose your own filling — whether it’s pork, chicken, egg, or even vegetarian — and watch the vendor skillfully assemble your sandwich with homemade pâté, pickled vegetables, chili, coriander, and sauces. We’ll enjoy our bánh mì just like the locals do — on a small stool by the sidewalk — while I share fun stories about Vietnamese street food culture and how this simple sandwich became a world-famous dish.

Next, we’ll head to a cozy local restaurant known for serving one of Hoi An’s most beloved dishes — Cơm Gà, or chicken rice. Here, you’ll enjoy tender shredded chicken served over fragrant rice that’s been cooked in chicken broth and turmeric. It comes with a mix of fresh herbs, pickled green papaya, and a light dipping sauce that brings all the flavors together. Every bite is flavorful, light, and refreshing — the perfect balance of texture and taste. As you enjoy your plate, I’ll explain the history behind this dish, how it’s different from chicken rice in other parts of Asia, and why it’s such a local favorite here in Hoi An.

Hoi An
Now it’s time to discover one of Hoi An’s most unique and traditional dishes — Cao Lầu, a noodle dish you can only find in this region. We’ll visit a small, family-owned noodle shop tucked away from the tourist crowds. Here, you’ll try Cao Lầu — made with chewy noodles, slices of barbecue pork, fresh herbs, crunchy rice crackers, and a small amount of broth. The noodles are special because they’re soaked in water from ancient Ba Le well and lye from wood ash, giving them a distinct texture and flavor. While you eat, I’ll share the fascinating story of how this dish reflects the cultural blend of Hoi An — Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese influences all in one bowl. Optional: Depending on your preferences, you may also try another regional noodle dish like Mì Quảng or Bún Thịt Nướng.

To wrap up our foodie adventure, we’ll relax at a charming local café where you can choose from a variety of refreshing drinks. Whether you’re in the mood for bold Vietnamese coffee (hot or iced), a fresh fruit juice, or a tropical smoothie, there’s something for everyone. If you love coffee, don’t miss the chance to try egg coffee, salt coffee, or a classic iced milk coffee (cà phê sữa đá) — rich, smooth, and uniquely Vietnamese. We’ll take our time here to sit back, cool down, and chat about your favorite tastes from the tour. It’s the perfect way to end a flavorful journey through Hoi An’s vibrant food scene.

I had a great experience...
I had a great experience on this food tour with Loi! I ended up being the only person on the tour, and Loi made it feel comfortable and relaxed from the start. He was very easy to talk to, which I really appreciated since it was just the two of us. We visited quite a few different spots, and he was very accommodating throughout the evening. He always checked if I needed something to drink and made suggestions while still giving me the flexibility to choose what we wanted to do next. It was such an easy, enjoyable way to experience the local food. I left very full, very relaxed, and happy I booked it. I would definitely recommend this tour with Loi!

I’m really happy to hear that you felt comfortable, relaxed, and enjoyed the experience, especially since it ended up being a private tour. You were such a lovely, friendly, and easy-going guest, and I really enjoyed our conversations and time together. I’m glad you left with a full belly and happy memories of the local food! Thank you again for choosing my tour and for your kind recommendation. I hope you have an amazing rest of your trip and hopefully we’ll meet again someday! 😊🇻🇳

Da Nang & Hoi A food tours.
David was an amazing guide. So good we booked him twice! First a food tour through Da Nang for a group of 17 and a second food tour through Hoi An. The food was all incredible and seeing different areas of both cities, but David’s knowledge and bubbly personality we enjoyed the most. Definitely recommend David and his tours.
Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your wonderful review! I’m truly grateful that you chose to book with me not just once, but twice — that really means a lot. It was a pleasure hosting your group in Da Nang and then showing you around Hoi An. I’m so happy to hear you enjoyed the food, exploring different areas, and sharing laughs together. Thank you for your kind words and recommendation. I hope to see you again for another food adventure in the future! Best wishes, David (Loi)

Why this scores 68
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Hoi An Street Food Walking Tour with Local Foodies: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Hoi An.
How much does Hoi An Street Food Walking Tour with Local Foodies cost?
+
Prices start at $34 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Hoi An usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Hoi An Street Food Walking Tour with Local Foodies take?
+
Plan for about 3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Hoi An is not rushed.
Is Hoi An Street Food Walking Tour with Local Foodies worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 68 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 12 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Hoi An, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Hoi An Street Food Walking Tour with Local Foodies?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Hoi An Street Food Walking Tour with Local Foodies suitable for kids and families?
+
The operator sets a minimum age of 2. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 3-hour running time when deciding.
How far in advance should I book Hoi An Street Food Walking Tour with Local Foodies?
+
Around 4 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Hoi An can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Hoi An and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Hoi An Street Food Walking Tour with Local Foodies start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Hoi An within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Hoi An?
+
On Outty we rank every Hoi An experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include HOI AN Hidden Gems in Rural Villages & River Islands PRIVATE TOUR, Coconut Jungle Eco & Hoi An City Tour With Boat Ride, Cooking Class Hoi An:Local Market, Basket Boat, Fishing & Cooking. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Hoi An?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Hoi An?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
