What you'll see and do
Nakasendo Tsumagojuku
After a quick stop at a roadside rest stop to stretch our legs, we will arrive at Tsumago-juku post town. Here your guide will explain the history and significance of the area and the Nakasendo trail before setting off on our hike.

Nakasendo Tsumagojuku
We will then set off on our hike down the Nakasendo trail—one of five ancient roads connecting the de facto capital of Edo (Tokyo) with other regions in Japan. The trail was most prominent during the Edo era. Today, most of the original Nakasendo has been lost to time or converted into modern highways and railway lines. However, the section of the trail we will hike remains relatively unchanged from the time of the samurai. You will even see segments of the trail with original cobblestone. The hike will also take you by two waterfalls—the perfect place to catch your breath, feel the cool mist on your face, and stop for lunch. Recharged, we will continue our hike past a lone teahouse run by a local volunteer. You’re welcome to stop here for a sip of tea or exchange stories with other travelers.
180 minutes here
Nakasendo Magome-juku
At the end of the trek, you will arrive at the beautiful post town of Magome. Situated on a slope, this town offers stunning views of the surrounding mountain scenery and features a main street lined with traditional wooden buildings. Even better, there are waterways on either side of the street, and the fast-running water powers multiple waterwheels. The post town features many shops, selling popular local crafts and snacks such as oyaki dumplings, gohei-mochi rice cakes, and ice cream. We recommend looking for some of the wood crafts made from local trees, many of which are extremely fragrant and, just as importantly, small and easy to carry back home. Of course, your guide will be available to help you take photos that will make your friends and family envious.

A memorable part of our holiday in Japan
It was great to get out of the big cities and see a different part of Japan. The history of the route was so interesting and our guide Mir was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions. He pointed out lots of interesting things along the way. He was considerate and did everything he could to make our trip memorable. The posts were interesting and really enjoyed the tea house at the half way point for an authentic experience. Highly recommend this for a day out. We did it from Kyoto (Shinkansen to Nagoya) which was fine.
Response from the operator: We are grateful to hear that you enjoyed your hike along the Nakasendo trail and that you were able to learn a lot from your guide. We are happy to hear that our start time made it easy to attend from Kyoto! Thank you again for joining us and for recommending our tour!

Historic Hike
It was a great day. Our guide Kim was very knowledgeable about the history of the 2 towns and everything around it. She kept a good pace and waited if needed. Very positive and willing to answer any questions. If you like hiking and history and seeing something other than the big cities in Japan I would definitely recommend! Also our bus driver was great!

Great historic hiking experience
We had a great time on this hike with our guide Kim. We came as a group of 5 with the total tour group being 12 people. Kim was fantastic and explained the history behind the area and frequently pointed out great photo spots. At the end of the tour during town exploration she even assisted with ordering food from stands in the area. Our driver Fujita-san was also great and made the drive over very pleasant. Highly reccomended.
Response from the operator: Thank you again for joining us and for taking the time to leave a review. We are so happy to hear how much you enjoyed your day and your guide. We hope you were able to create some lasting memories (and have some great photos to remember them by). Enjoy the rest of your time in Japan!

The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Hiking the Historic Nakasendo Trail [1 Day Tour from Nagoya]: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Nagoya.
How much does Hiking the Historic Nakasendo Trail [1 Day Tour from Nagoya] cost?
+
Prices start at $15300 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Nagoya usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Hiking the Historic Nakasendo Trail [1 Day Tour from Nagoya] take?
+
Plan for about 8 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Nagoya is not rushed.
Is Hiking the Historic Nakasendo Trail [1 Day Tour from Nagoya] worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 90 out of 100, which we label "90+ Club". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 174 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most highly reviewed in Nagoya, and how flexible the cancellation terms are. Scoring 90 or above puts it in the Outty 90+ Club, the top tier of everything we rank.
Can I cancel or reschedule Hiking the Historic Nakasendo Trail [1 Day Tour from Nagoya]?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Hiking the Historic Nakasendo Trail [1 Day Tour from Nagoya] suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 8-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Hiking the Historic Nakasendo Trail [1 Day Tour from Nagoya]?
+
Around 61 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Nagoya can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Nagoya and add a light layer if any part of the 8-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Hiking the Historic Nakasendo Trail [1 Day Tour from Nagoya] start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Nagoya within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Nagoya?
+
On Outty we rank every Nagoya experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Nagoya Highlight Tour guided by a friendly local, Ghibli Park 1-Day Bus Tour from Nagoya, Ise Grand Shrine, Meoto Iwa & Mikimoto Pearl Island - From Nagoya. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Nagoya?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Nagoya?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
