Your tasting is accompanied by handmade tortillas using organic corn, refreshing fruit water and local mezcal. Your host will share part of their knowledge of cacao, explaining how it was once used as currency in pre-Hispanic times and how it continues to symbolize love, hospitality, and celebration during family gatherings, weddings, and Day of the Dead traditions. Guided by her, you’ll select cacao seeds on a table, roast them on a traditional wood-fired comal, peel them by hand, and grind them on a stone metate, just as chocolate has been traditionally prepared in Oaxaca’s indigenous communities for generations. Finally, you’ll whisk your own authentic hot chocolate using a traditional molinillo and enjoy it served with a local sweet bread. The perfect ending to this unforgettable cultural experience.

    6. Teotitlan del Valle

To conclude our day, we’ll visit a family textile workshop where generations of Zapotec artisans continue to preserve their traditional weaving techniques. The family will guide you through each step of the weaving process, answer your questions, and warmly welcome photos. Before we return, you’ll have time to browse their beautiful gallery, where every rug is handcrafted and available for purchase, offering a meaningful way to support the local artisan community.

Don't look elsewhere; Toni and his team are the absolute best!

Let me start by saying that I was a challenging customer for Oaxaca Conmigo. That was because I had the very unusual ask of having Toni and the team assist me with planning my engagement to my now-fiancé. Never phased by the ask, Toni ensured we arrived at Hierve El Agua when no one was there for "photographs" with the group. He then hid a beautiful table with champagne, mezcal, and flowers that Toni sourced and brought. He also coordinated with my photographer to ensure that the plan would work flawlessly. My fiancé said it was like being a Disney princess, and Oaxaca Conmigo made it happen. Regarding the rest of the tour, it was a blast. We had an amazing meal at a tiny restaurant near Hierve El Agua, saw Zapotec ruins, drank delicious mezcal, and learned how to make traditional Oaxacan textiles. Each spot was very carefully curated and did not feel like a tourist trap. Could not recommend more if you are on a trip to the magical Mexican State of Oaxaca! We had such a good time that we scheduled a second tour to see Monte Albán and the City itself. They will do custom work for you if you ask. We also intend to reach out for a coastal tour of Oaxaca one day. Toni is very responsive, and you just need to reach out via WhatsApp. Please note that TripAdvisor has the wrong number. It is +52 951 210 3533. Thank you, Toni and Oaxaca Conmigo, for everything. You all are the BEST.

The perfect day out of the city

Absolutely loved our trip to Hierve el Agua with Jesus and Rodolfo! I thought it would be too much (and it is a lot) but it was a super fun day. we had a blast and im glad we booked a private tour with Oaxaca Conmigo because we could adjust times and it didn’t feel rushed. jesus was an amazing tour guide and Rodolfo a wonderful driver. Highly recommend!

Response from the operator: Gracias amigos! Chuy is one of the best! Me alegro que hayan disfrutado cada parada y cada experiencia en el tour. Thank you for taking the time and write a review for us! It was a pleasure to have you in Oaxaca and show you a little bit our our beautiful Land! See you next time with more adventures!

    +

Prices start at $469 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Oaxaca City usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

    +

That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 2 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Oaxaca City, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

How far in advance should I book Hierve el agua & Authentic Food Tour: Mole, Chocolate & Mezcal!?

    +

Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Oaxaca City can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Oaxaca City and add a light layer if any part of the 9.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

What are the best things to do in Oaxaca City?

    +

On Outty we rank every Oaxaca City experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include AUTHENTIC OAXACA CULTURAL FOOD TOUR, eat like a local., Hierve el Agua 2.5 hours, Mitla, Tule, Rugs and Mezcal for a Day, Traditional Oaxaqueña Cooking with Grandma's Recipes. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Oaxaca City?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Oaxaca City?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
