Barong Temple is thought to have been built around the 9th and 10th centuries AD, as a relic of the Medang Kingdom from the Mataram period. This temple was rediscovered at the beginning of the 20th century in a collapsed condition during the expansion of a sugar cane plantation for the construction of a sugar factory by a Dutchman. The name barong was given by the people because there are ornaments in the recesses of the temple body that resemble barongan, a mystical creature in Javanese mythology.

More temples to explore in Yogyakarta
I strongly recommend this tour! We did it one day before Borobudur and Prambanan because we wanted to see more temples. We enjoyed it a lot, our guide Wardo was kind and attentive. Alga Lova Tours recommended us to include a bike tour, it was extra cost but so worth it. It was lovely to bike around a small village near the temples and see the plantations. We had another guide Salwa for this who was super nice and knowledgeable about the village, plantations and the temples. I recommend considering this tour for your trip to Yogyakarta.

Would highly recommend!
The tour was great. Nice temples and a great guide that did not rush things. Really friendly and informative. The temples you visit are really cool and not crowded like Borobudur or the Prambanan complex.
Response from the operator: Thanks for coming and using our service. Glad to have you, please welcome back anytime! 🙂🙏

Hidden Gems Indeed!
I highly recommend this tour for those travelers with a passion for architecture and archeology who want to go a little off the beaten path. We had pretty much every temple we visited to ourselves, and they were each distinct, atmospheric, and fascinating. Bagus was an excellent guide, who also arranged for us to have a delicious lunch and incorporate Prambanan itself as the capstone of our visit.
Response from the operator: Thanks for coming and using our service. Gland to have you, welcome back anytime 🙂🙏

Strong recommendation for the “hidden gems” tour
This was a great all-day tour exploring many different temples in the general vicinity of Prambanan. Each temple seemed bigger, grander, or otherwise more impressive than the last. We had several of them all to ourselves. At our request, the company customized the tour to add a stop at Prambanan itself. Our guide, Bagus, was very friendly and knowledgeable and adapted well to our preferences. We were taken to a very nice restaurant for lunch (an extra expense) and an interesting coffee bar after the last temple visit (another extra expense). We were also connected with a knowledgeable and entertaining guide at Prambanan, which did not allow outside guides. Overall, we would highly recommend this tour for anyone who wants to see more temples than just the “big one” of Prambanan—which was, indeed, magnificent.
Response from the operator: Thanks for coming and great review. We were happy to have you, welcome back anytime in the future.

Why this scores 66
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Hidden Gems Temples Tour: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Yogyakarta.
How much does Hidden Gems Temples Tour cost?
+
Prices start at $45 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Yogyakarta usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Hidden Gems Temples Tour take?
+
Plan for about 10 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Yogyakarta is not rushed.
Is Hidden Gems Temples Tour worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 66 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 4 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Yogyakarta, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Hidden Gems Temples Tour?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Hidden Gems Temples Tour suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 10-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Hidden Gems Temples Tour?
+
Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Yogyakarta can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Yogyakarta and add a light layer if any part of the 10-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Hidden Gems Temples Tour start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Yogyakarta within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Yogyakarta?
+
On Outty we rank every Yogyakarta experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Yogyakarta Private Car Hire with Driver, From Surabaya / Malang : Mt Bromo Sunrise - Ijen Blue Fire 2D1N, Borobudur Full Climb Up And Prambanan ALL INCLUSIVE PRIVATE Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Yogyakarta?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Yogyakarta?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
