A pyroclastic experience.
Our guide, Luciano Leone, is an archaeologist and quite a character, with a wealth of firsthand experience excavating Herculaneum, along with plenty of knowledge and enthusiasm to match. The tour is much quieter, shadier and more atmospheric, without the huge crowds of Pompeii. The story of Herculaneum, which is less famous than Pompeii, is a remarkable one. It was a small, affluent seaside town. The site offers a more intimate area to explore compared to Pompeii's sprawling streets. Herculaneum was excavated much later and lies heavily buried beneath the modern town of Ercolano, limiting its visibility and accessibility to the public. It was sealed by 20 metres of ash and volcanic mud from a superheated pyroclastic surge, which hardened into rock. This airtight seal preserved architecture and décor intact, including features in wood and marble, decorations, jewellery, and even organic remains like food. Luciano met us at the front of the visitor centre of the Herculaneum Archaeological Park and led us down a gently sloping pathway to a lookout point that gives you a view across the excavation site from above. From that point, you're confronted with the eerie sight of arched boat sheds along the town's ancient seafront. These vaulted brick chambers hold exact replicas of the skeletal remains of victims discovered there. We were taken through the onsite museum first, and then on down into the excavated city. Luciano gave us a tour that was dynamic, humorous and very informative. We left the tour very satisfied as we headed back to our night's accommodation in Portici.

It was difficult to know...
It was difficult to know where you were as the numbers on the audio guide didn't match to numbers at the site. It would have been much clearer if they did.

Getting in stressful, but herculaneum worth seeing.
Tour provider not visible on arrival and no-one keen to help. Sent to 5 different people and eventually ticket booth staff gave us complimentary ticket. Received phone call 40 minutes after trip due to start to say we hadn't turned up. Explained we had and was told our fault as went to wrong place as the lady was sitting outside waiting - we had spoken to bith ladies waiying outside. Straight after this phonecall we received email telling us where to go and what to look for - so this email was received 41 minutes after trip was due to start but was clearly meant yo be sent prior to trip. Audio needs updating as difficult to follow in parts due to artifacts moved, but map helpful. Herculaneum itself great, although would have been more enjoyable if not stressed about getting in!
