About this experience

Walk the trail voted Best of the World 2026 by National Geographic readers: a 5-day journey of reconnection with nature, yourself, food and community, 42 km on foot through rice terraces, sacred waters and Bali's last primary jungle. The Heart of Bali trail is part of the Astungkara Trail, starting at a 700-year-old sacred banyan tree in Tabanan and ending in the waterfall valleys of Munduk. You cross primary jungle few organizations can guide you through, join a Melukat water purification ceremony with a local priest, learn from master artisans, and exchange with farming communities leading the regenerative projects your trail directly funds: we are not just a travel company. Meals are vegetarian, grown on the farms you cross. Nights are spent on handcrafted platforms immersed in nature, in places few travelers ever get to sleep: deep in the forest, at the foot of a waterfall, on a mountaintop. Small groups of max 9, run by Astungkara Way's own full-time guides and organizers.

A deeply moving experience

Thank you so much, to the Astungkara Way team and guides. This 5 day hike through glorious mountain terrain turned out to be so much more than I could have imagined. The majesty of the land, barely a tourist in cooee - and oh, did I mention the incredible home-cooked meals? But I think most of all, I will never ever forget the warmth, humour, patience, and encouragement from our beautiful generous guides. Almost 2 weeks later, I still feel deeply moved and blessed by the experience. Wonderful. Such gratitude.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your beautiful words Julie. We are glad that this experience stayed with you and we hope to see you again in the future. Maybe to explore the new North-West Bali trail ?

An adventure into the heart of Bali. Not to be missed

For travellers who want to experience Bali away from the tourist hot spot this is an adventure not to be missed. You will fall in love with Bali again and again. Into the heart of Bali, hiking and sleeping in stunning locations with no other tourists is sight. Most of all the kindness, warmth and humour of our young Balinese guides was deeply touching. Astungkara way is truly unique in its authenticity and ethical values.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much Annie, we really appreciate your review and kind words. We are beyond happy that you had such a great experience with us that will stay as a memomory for a lifetime. Hope to see you soon in the future.

ASTUNGKARA - A REMARKABLE EXPERIENCE

We cannot recommend this trip enough! If you wish to experience a bit of the "real" Bali, do this pilgrimage. The people we met on the way and the wonderful way we were treated, made this an experience we will always remember. We stayed in places so beautiful and peaceful, away from the tourist hubs, one often associates Bali with. Our guides, Saba, Anjani and Tiara, were amazing, imparting knowledge about the culture and we ended up with genuine friendships.

Definitely one to do if you visit Bali

Together with our 11yo and 14yo we hiked the Heart of Bali. The guides were amazing and the whole trip was so well organised and was the best organised hike we have ever been on. From learning about the culture, the people, the environment to experiencing the kindness from everyone, the process of regenerative farming and spending time together whilst also having time to myself to enjoy the amazing views.

Heart of Bali: 5-Day Bali Walking Trek by Astungkara Way: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Seminyak.

How much does Heart of Bali: 5-Day Bali Walking Trek by Astungkara Way cost?

+

Prices start at $10600000 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Seminyak usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Heart of Bali: 5-Day Bali Walking Trek by Astungkara Way take?

+

Plan for about 120 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Seminyak is not rushed.

Is Heart of Bali: 5-Day Bali Walking Trek by Astungkara Way worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 70 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 41 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable food & drink in Seminyak, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Heart of Bali: 5-Day Bali Walking Trek by Astungkara Way?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 144 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Heart of Bali: 5-Day Bali Walking Trek by Astungkara Way suitable for kids and families?

+

The operator sets a minimum age of 12. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 120-hour running time when deciding.

How far in advance should I book Heart of Bali: 5-Day Bali Walking Trek by Astungkara Way?

+

Around 14 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Seminyak can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Seminyak and add a light layer if any part of the 120-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Heart of Bali: 5-Day Bali Walking Trek by Astungkara Way start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Seminyak within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Seminyak?

+

On Outty we rank every Seminyak experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Best of Bali Waterfalls: Tibumana, Tukad Cepung and Tegenungan, Bali Instagram Tour: The Most Scenic Spots, Ubud Hot Springs and Waterfall Private Guided Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Seminyak?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Seminyak?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
