1. This three-arch stone bridge straddling the Grand Canal is the tallest and most intact ancient bridge still standing along the Hangzhou section of the waterway. First built in the Ming Dynasty, it has witnessed over six centuries of history. From atop the bridge, the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal unfolds beneath your feet. Stretching nearly 1,800 kilometers, it is the oldest and longest man-made waterway in the world—predating the Suez Canal by over a thousand years and the Panama Canal by nearly two millennia. Even today, cargo barges laden with coal and sand rumble beneath its arches—this canal has never retired; it simply keeps working. On one side of the bridge rises the modern Hangzhou skyline, all glass and high-rises; on the other, time-worn neighborhoods of whitewashed walls and black-tiled roofs. Gongchen Bridge stands between them—a silent gatekeeper, holding the past in one hand and the present in the other.

2. A hundred years ago, this was the busiest dock and wholesale market in Hangzhou. Cargo boats packed the canal; rice shops, cloth merchants, and oil presses lined the streets from dawn till night—most of the rice people ate, the cloth they wore, and the oil they burned came through here. Then came the factories—cotton mills, jute mills, silk-printing plants—and the machines hummed along the canal for half a century. Then the factories left, and the place fell quiet—so quiet that some wanted to tear it down and build high-rises. But Hangzhou chose otherwise. The old neighborhood was kept—not turned into a theme park, not emptied of its residents. Just left to carry on with its days. So today, elderly women still sit at their doorsteps sorting greens; new cafés open next to old teahouses; new streetlights shine on moss still growing between the stones. Qiaoxi is neither a preserved relic nor a polished performance. It's a piece of Hangzhou history that never got sealed behind glass.

3. XiaoHe ZhiJie

   Thirty minutes from Gongchen Bridge along the canal, three rivers meet. Locals call it "where rivers join." Unlike Qiaoxi, Xiaohe is quieter. If Qiaoxi is the canal's "living room," Xiaohe is its "backyard"—peaceful, made for lingering. Old Qing-era homes line the street—wooden doors, carved windows, dark roofs. Flagstones gleam after rain like dark mirrors. A leather craftsman stitches at his doorstep. A teahouse sends out ballad melodies through bamboo blinds. A bookshop owner reads in the corner, indifferent to customers. At the far end, family eateries clutter doorsteps with potted flowers. The lady shelling beans asks, "Eating or tea?" like you're an old neighbor. No one hurries. No hawking, no rushing. Canal boats drift slower here. Sit with tea, watch ripples—time feels almost tangible. Xiaohe isn't for visiting. It's for staying. No photos, no maps. Just sit, let water flow, let mind empty—that's the gift of this street.
