What you get

    About this experience

Just outside of Cody, Wyoming, we head into the badlands searching for wild mustangs across the high desert. We will travel backroads with big views of the McCullough Peaks, Heart Mountain, and the distant Absaroka Mountains. We spend time watching the horses in their natural habitat and share stories about the mustangs, the wildlife, and the history of this part of Wyoming. It’s quiet country here and there are plenty of wide open spaces with antelope, golden eagles, and some of the best views around Cody. Tours are relaxed, small group experiences in comfortable Ford Transit vans with hotel pickup included. Whether you’re into wildlife, photography, western history, or just want to get off the beaten path for a few hours, this is a great way to experience a different side of Wyoming.

    What you'll see and do

    1. Buffalo Bill Center of the West

Pass by one of Cody’s most famous landmarks, home to five museums dedicated to the history, wildlife, art, and spirit of the American West. Your guide will share a bit about Buffalo Bill Cody and how this frontier town became the gateway to Yellowstone.

      Pass by without stopping

    2. You’ll spot Heart Mountain off in the distance during the tour. It rises up by itself above the basin and you can see it from miles away across the open desert. Between the mountain views, Wyoming badlands, and wild horses, this part of Wyoming still feels untamed.

      Pass by without stopping

    3. We head out into the McCullough Peaks, a stretch of Wyoming badlands where wild mustangs still roam. It’s wide open country with big views of red badlands and distant mountains. There isn't much else out there besides horses, antelope, and open space. This is the quieter side of Wyoming that most people drive right past.

    Spectacular Scenery and Wild Horses

My tour with Covered Ground Yellowstone Tours to see the mustangs was an amazing experience. The pickup was smooth and convenient; our guide, Kody, picked me up directly from my hotel in a comfortable AC van and dropped me off afterward. We drove to McCullough Peaks, and the day started with spotting a lone mustang, followed by some pronghorn—such beautiful, graceful antelopes. As with any wildlife tour, sightings aren't guaranteed, but Kody shared interesting facts to keep us engaged while we searched. Then, we found a whole herd of about 40 mustangs! It was breathtaking to see them in the wild. Kody set up a spotting scope and had binoculars for us to use, so we spent some time just watching them peacefully graze. We ended the tour taking in the spectacular views and scenery of the area. I highly recommend this activity for anyone visiting Cody who loves horses.
