What you'll see and do

  1. Maras

Our first stop is Maras, from which, we can get to the salt mines. The salt mines display a bizarre spectacle of beauty. Located on a wide-open hill above the Urubamba Valley, a natural salt water stream runs underground. In pre-Incan times, they have been evaporating the salty water from this stream in order to obtain the salt that gets left behind. How it works: The highly salty water emerges at a spring, a natural outlet of the underground stream. The flow is directed into an intricate system of tiny channels constructed so that the water runs gradually down onto the several hundred ancient terraced ponds. The water, which is exposed to the sun, leaves salt on the land. Viewed from the peak, the myriad of rectangles looks like an enormous painting designed by nature.

  2. Maras Moray Tours

After visiting the salt mines near Maras, we continue on a short distance to the Moray ruins. The ruins are composed of three coliseums, which are thought to have been used by the Incas as a sort of open air crop laboratory. The coliseums consist of several enormous terraced circular depressions, the largest of which is about 30m/98ft deep. The purpose of these depressions is still uncertain but their depth and orientation with respect to wind and sun creates a temperature difference of as much as 15 °C/27 °F between the top and bottom. This large temperature difference was possibly used by the Incas to study the effects of different climatic conditions on crops. The terraces are arranged in concentric circles and are reminiscent of an ancient Greek theatre.

Had a great time watching the dancing and weaving. Also bought some baby alpaca sweaters. Wore their custumes and had pictures taken.

Response from the operator: We are glad to know you had a great time during your Maras Moray tour. The dancing, weaving demonstration, traditional costumes, and local shopping clearly made the experience fun and memorable. Thank you for sharing these lovely moments with us.

An authentic Andean experience

This was the final tour in a wonderful 11 days spent in the care of Edward and others from Valencia Travel. As always this tour gave me a good sense of the lives of the people in the areas we visited. Seeing Edward mentoring less experienced guides to give us an authentic, safe, fun and educational experience was one of the highlights of my time in Peru. Thanks for everything.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful words. It was truly a pleasure to be part of your journey through Peru, and we’re honored that this experience was the final tour of such a memorable trip. Knowing that our tours helped you connect with the lives of the people and the places you visited means a great deal to us. We’re especially grateful that you noticed Edward’s dedication to mentoring new guides — sharing knowledge and passion is a core part of who we are, and your recognition makes it even more meaningful. Thank you for trusting us with your experience, and we hope to welcome you back to Peru one day.

Half Day - Maras Moray Tour - Group Service: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Cusco.

How much does Half Day - Maras Moray Tour - Group Service cost?

+

Prices start at $55 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Cusco usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Half Day - Maras Moray Tour - Group Service take?

+

Plan for about 4 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Cusco is not rushed.

Is Half Day - Maras Moray Tour - Group Service worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 58 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 3 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Cusco, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Half Day - Maras Moray Tour - Group Service?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Half Day - Maras Moray Tour - Group Service suitable for kids and families?

+

The operator sets a minimum age of 2. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 4-hour running time when deciding.

How far in advance should I book Half Day - Maras Moray Tour - Group Service?

+

Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Cusco can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Cusco and add a light layer if any part of the 4-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Half Day - Maras Moray Tour - Group Service start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Cusco within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Cusco?

+

On Outty we rank every Cusco experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Sacred Valley Full Day Tour, Peruvian Cooking Class Cocktails and Market Tour in Cusco, Cusco: Rainbow Mountain & Red Valley Premium Day Trip with Meals. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Cusco?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Cusco?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
