Avoid Viator, go on your own!
We booked this tour specifically because it included the Temple of Literature, however we were not taken there and not mentioned by the guide. When we contacted Viator they didn’t comment on why this was excluded and blatantly accused us of asking for a partial refund just to get money back for no reason. They would not even reply to our comment why this temple visit had not been on the trip. They were very difficult to deal with , slightly aggressive and a complete lack of customer service. We ended up visiting the Temple of Literature on our own the next day with an audio guide, probably a lot cheaper and more enjoyable. I absolutely cannot recommend Viator in anyway.
Response from the operator: I am so sorry to hear that but I followed Viator's booking confirmation as I never published the Temple of Literature in my tour. You can see below is the inclusion part of my tour without temple of literature. A Wonderful Hanoi Experience
This was an excellent tour in every respect. I was doing a S-E Asia cruise by myself. When I saw that the ship would be docked for two nights in Halong Bay, I wanted to see Hanoi, but the ship did not offer a one- day excursion in/ out of Hanoi that appealed to me. I had some ideas of what I wanted to see but no idea of where in Hanoi those sites were, how to get to them, or the amount of time it would all take. My travel agent found Anh ( Cao Thien) , an independent Tour Guide / Operator in Hanoi, to provide me with what I was looking for and I could not have been more satisfied. Anh connected directly with me by email to ascertain what I wanted to see and planned our route and schedule accordingly, to customize and maximize my experience in the time available. He picked me up right at the ship and ensured that I returned to it well in time for sailing, without any stress. He took me to see everything that I wanted to see and more! In addition, he managed to work in two wonderful Vietnamese meals at local establishments that I would never have found on my own, all in an efficient but relaxed and friendly ambiance that made me feel totally comfortable. Anh was ( and is) organized, reliable, friendly, knowledgeable about Vietnamese history and culture and enjoys sharing that knowledge with his customers, whether individuals or groups and I highly recommend him! Response from the operator: Hi Mary, Thank you so much for your great review about my work. I look forward to meeting you again in the future.

Good tour if short on time
Mr. Hoang was our guide for the half-day tour. He was a super lovely guy who was very knowledgeable about all things in Hanoi. Brought us around in a car to various temples and to the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum, where we managed to just arrive in time before the queue was closed. Great tour if you’re in town for a short time. Super friendly too, so no hesitation in recommending.

Good cultural tour
The tour was good, but it can be shorter. One may not need a guided tour for the places we visited with a guide. Our guide was fine.

Sean
Fabulous tour. Anh met me at my hotel and transported me around Hanoi taking in all the slights possible in half a day. His knowledge was immense and his friendly manner made the tour interesting and fun. I would highly recommend booking a tour with Anh.
Response from the operator: Hi Sean, Thank you very much for booking a half day city with us and thanks a lot for your great review. I do hope to meet you again in Vietnam in the future. With kind regards Anh

Why this scores 45
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Half-Day Hanoi Private City Tour: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Hanoi.
How much does Half-Day Hanoi Private City Tour cost?
+
Prices start at $46 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Hanoi usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Half-Day Hanoi Private City Tour take?
+
Plan for about 3.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Hanoi is not rushed.
Is Half-Day Hanoi Private City Tour worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 45 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.3/5 across 9 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable culture & history in Hanoi, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Half-Day Hanoi Private City Tour?
+
No. This experience is sold on a non-refundable basis, so only book a date you are confident about. Similar experiences in the city do offer free cancellation if flexibility matters more than price.
Is Half-Day Hanoi Private City Tour suitable for kids and families?
+
The operator sets a minimum age of 2. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 3.5-hour running time when deciding.
How far in advance should I book Half-Day Hanoi Private City Tour?
+
Around 3 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Hanoi can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Hanoi and add a light layer if any part of the 3.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Half-Day Hanoi Private City Tour start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Hanoi within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Hanoi?
+
On Outty we rank every Hanoi experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Ninh Binh Day Trip from Hanoi with Tam Coc or Trang An & Mua Cave, Ha Giang Loop Tour 4 Days 3 Nights with Ha Giang Vision Tour, Halong Bay Day Tour With Titop Island, Cave, Kayak & Lunch. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Hanoi?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Hanoi?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
