Sanahin Monastery is an Armenian monastery founded in the 10th century in the Lori Province of Armenia. The name Sanahin literally translates from Armenian as "this one is older than that one", presumably representing a claim to having an older monastery than the neighbouring Haghpat Monastery. The two villages and their monasteries are similar in many ways, and lie in plain view of each other on a dissected plateau formation, separated by a deep "crack" formed by a small river flowing into the Debed river.

What you'll see and do
Haghpat Monastery
The monastery was founded by Queen Khosrovanuysh, wife of the Bagratid king Ashot III, probably in 976. The nearby monastery at Sanahin was built around the same time. The location of Haghpat Monastery was chosen so that it overlooks the Debed River in northern Armenia's Lori region. It was built, not on a peak, but halfway up a hillside on a site chosen to afford protection and concealment from prying eyes and also in response to a kind of monastic humility. It is built on a verdant promontory located in the middle of a mountain cirque, which is often wreathed in clouds. A peak on the opposite side of the river is over 2,500 meters high.

Great, Arranged at the Last-Minute Tour to Haghpat Region
After some changes to my itinerary, I wound up reserving a car with a driver somewhat last-minute: I couldn't have been happier with the quick communications by the organizers; with the driver, who was delightful; and with the overall experience. The driver to Haghpat and its surroundings from Yerevan is long--but stunning. The monasteries are great. Highly recommend this.

Must-do!
If you are visiting Armenia, Sergey's tour is a must-do. The locations were very beautiful and featured a number of sites that were both aesthetically pleasing and had significant history. He also went above and beyond and took us to Zarni Parni upon our request, despite it not officially being part of the tour. Apart from the locations, the service was excellent. The vehicle was very comfortable and the driving was remarkably smooth (most importantly, there was air conditioning!) There were also amenities such as water provided free of charge which demonstrates the thoughtfulness of our guide. I highly recommend for anyone interesting in seeing stunning landscapes and constructions in great comfort to take this tour!

Our experience was absolutely fantastic! Sergey adjusted the trip to our personal needs,. He picked us up on time from different locations; was easy and quick to communicate with; drove us safely with comfort the entire day,. Sergey was attentive and listened to all my request. Already looking forward for our next adventure❤️

Haghpat,Sanahin,Akhtala: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Yerevan.
How much does Haghpat,Sanahin,Akhtala cost?
+
Prices start at $170 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Yerevan usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Haghpat,Sanahin,Akhtala take?
+
Plan for about 7 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Yerevan is not rushed.
Is Haghpat,Sanahin,Akhtala worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 62 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 6 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Yerevan, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Haghpat,Sanahin,Akhtala?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Haghpat,Sanahin,Akhtala suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 7-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Haghpat,Sanahin,Akhtala?
+
Around 2 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Yerevan can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Yerevan and add a light layer if any part of the 7-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Haghpat,Sanahin,Akhtala start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Yerevan within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Yerevan?
+
On Outty we rank every Yerevan experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Group Tour: Lake Sevan (Sevanavank), Dilijan (Goshavank, Haghartsin), Group Tour: Khor Virap, Garni temple, Geghard, Lavash baking, Group Tour: Garni pagan temple, Geghard monastery, Lake Sevan, Sevanavank. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Yerevan?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Yerevan?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
