    Herbie the Love Bug

I had a wonderful bespoke experience. 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM. Met me at baggage claim, brought me to the wall snd to The Forbidden City and dropped me off at a hotel. Clean, new car, brilliant chauffeur Ms Chan, and a very engaging host/guide Herbie who offered a sweeping history of Chinese civilization as context for the sites we visited. He even helped me clear of some hotel details.

Best spent waiting for a flight ever!

During our journey from Stockholm, Sweden to Vietnam, we had an 11 hour layover at Beijing Airport on March 9th. Wanting to make good use of the time rather than simply waiting at the airport, we found www.beijinglayovertour.com and decided to book a tour. The booking process was simple and efficient. The operator responded to all our questions almost immediately, and we arranged a private tour of the Great Wall and the Old Town Hutongs. We were met at the airport Starbucks by our excellent guide, Herbie, and departed by car toward the Great Wall. On the way, Herbie provided us with a fascinating introduction to Chinese history related to the Wall. Throughout the tour he continued sharing his extensive knowledge, explaining the Wall’s purpose, its strategic design, and the enemies it was built to defend against. It was all extremely interesting. After visiting the Great Wall, we continued on to the Old Town Hutongs, where Herbie once again enriched the experience with his insights into local history and culture. In summary, the tour was both surprisingly educational and very enjoyable. Being picked up and dropped off directly at the airport made the experience exceptionally convenient—especially since, without any knowledge of Chinese, arranging such a trip on our own would have been very challenging. And for anyone wondering: Herbie speaks excellent English.

    Well spend 11 hour layover!

Our layover in Beijing airport turned out to be a historic and well spent 11 hours! Our amazing guide Herbie was excellent and informed. We were all four very happy and would recommend everyone who has the time to book this trip. Everything went smooth and we were never in a rush.

The Best Guide We Could Have Asked For in Beijing

Herbie was an outstanding guide! We had the pleasure of having a private guided tour with him at the Great Wall and the Forbidden City in Beijing, and the experience exceeded all our expectations. He was incredibly attentive to our entire family, especially our teenage children, making sure everyone was engaged and comfortable throughout the tour. His kindness, patience, and professionalism truly stood out. Herbie has an impressive depth of knowledge about Chinese history and the sites we visited, explaining everything in a clear, detailed, and engaging way. His English is excellent, which made communication smooth and easy. We highly recommend Herbie to anyone looking for a knowledgeable, dedicated, and personable guide who truly enhances the experience!

Great Wall-Forbidden City-Hutong Private Layover Guided Tour: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Beijing.

How much does Great Wall-Forbidden City-Hutong Private Layover Guided Tour cost?

    +

Prices start at $105 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Beijing usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Great Wall-Forbidden City-Hutong Private Layover Guided Tour take?

    +

Plan for about 12 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Beijing is not rushed.

Is Great Wall-Forbidden City-Hutong Private Layover Guided Tour worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 79 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 44 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Beijing, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Great Wall-Forbidden City-Hutong Private Layover Guided Tour?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Great Wall-Forbidden City-Hutong Private Layover Guided Tour suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 12-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Great Wall-Forbidden City-Hutong Private Layover Guided Tour?

    +

Around 15 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Beijing can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Beijing and add a light layer if any part of the 12-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Great Wall-Forbidden City-Hutong Private Layover Guided Tour start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Beijing within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Beijing?

    +

On Outty we rank every Beijing experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Mubus: Mutianyu Great Wall Bus Tour with Summer Palace Options, Beijing: Top 6 Highlights All Inclusive 2-Day Private Tour, Private Mutianyu Great Wall Trip With English-Speaking Driver. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Beijing?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Beijing?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
