About this experience

Grand Cayman is one of the world’s most remarkable places to experience bioluminescence, a rare natural phenomenon that turns the water into a display of light after dark. Experience two sides of the island in one evening — from the shallow waters of Starfish Point to the glowing waters of Bioluminescent Bay. Begin at Starfish Point, where you can wade through warm Caribbean water and see colorful cushion sea stars in their natural environment, along with unusual marine life such as upside-down jellyfish. Then continue by boat to Bio Bay. Millions of microscopic organisms illuminate the water with flashes of light as it moves, a natural phenomenon found in only a handful of places around the world. Watch the bioluminescence from the boat, or slip into the water yourself and see the glow respond to every movement around you. After an evening on the water, settle in for the boat ride back with memories of the Caribbean and a bay that glows after dark.

What you'll see and do

  1. Starfish Point

Begin your evening with pickup from participating accommodations in the Seven Mile Beach area. The boat generally departs Raleigh Quay at 6:30 PM during summer and 5:30 PM during winter, with hotel pickups scheduled earlier. After leaving Raleigh Quay, stop at Kaibo Dock, the alternative meeting point for guests staying outside the Seven Mile Beach area. From there, continue by boat to Starfish Point. Step into the warm, shallow Caribbean water and look for colorful cushion sea stars and seashells resting along the sandy bottom. Your guides will introduce you to the marine life found here, including the unusual upside-down jellyfish. Enjoy time in the water and the peaceful surroundings before boarding the boat again. Then continue toward Cayman’s Bioluminescent Bay. Once darkness settles in, the lower light conditions allow the bay’s natural glow to become visible, setting the stage for the highlight of your evening.

  2. Bioluminescent Bay

Once darkness settles in, arrive at the Bioluminescent Bay near Cayman Kai, where millions of microscopic organisms create flashes of light as the water moves. Spend most of your boat tour here while your guides explain what causes the bioluminescence and why this particular bay provides the conditions for the phenomenon to occur. Watch the glow appear around the boat as the water is disturbed, creating a completely different view of Grand Cayman after dark. You can enjoy the bioluminescence from the boat or choose to swim in the bay, where movement through the water makes the glow visible around you. Swimming is optional. After your time at Bio Bay, return by boat via Kaibo Dock and Raleigh Quay Private Dock. Guests using the shuttle service will then be transported back to participating accommodations in the Seven Mile Beach area. Total duration: approximately 3 hours, including transportation. The boat tour itself lasts approximately 2 hours.

What a fun evening trip

Excellent and knowledgeable staff! The whole crew made the trip fully enjoyable and had enough knowledge to enhance the experience. The hotel pickup and transport driver were also great. Highly recommended

Unforgettable family experience! Book this tour!

Captain Sugar Bear made us feel right at home. It’s clear this crew knows what they’re doing. Captain and First Mate Alex taught us about the sea life at night in a fun and interesting way. Our first stop was at Starfish point where we got to hold beautiful red starfish and touch a jellyfish! Sugar Bear and Alex were careful to make sure we understood how these animals interact with their environment and how to safely handle them. Next we hopped over to bioluminescence bay, which was amazing! You could see the glow behind the boat as it trolled into the bay. Once stopped we all hopped in and swam. Marcella was amazing, making sure everyone got photos. 10/10 tour!

These thieves agreed to...

These thieves agreed to pick us up at our Condo which Viator CONFIRMED! They did not pick us up. Instead they stole over $300, and refused to refund. That has cost Viator our future business, and likely legal action. DO NOT USE THIS PROVIDER. Viator should cancel relationships with them.

Response from the operator: Hi Scott_W, We’re sorry this experience did not meet your expectations. As stated in the tour description, pick-up service is only available within the Seven Mile Beach corridor. Since your condo was outside this area, we sent you the closest meeting point and instructions beforehand. We did not receive confirmation from you, and on the day of the tour you were unfortunately marked as a no-show. For transparency, our policy notes that no-shows and late arrivals are non-refundable. We always aim to provide clear communication and a respectful service, and we kindly ask that the same courtesy is extended to our team. We truly hope to welcome you another time to experience the magic of the Bioluminescent Bay in Grand Cayman. The Caribbean Cruise Tours Team

Awesome once in a lifetime experience

Such a cool experience looked like glitter under the water. They provide suits so you don't get stung. They give you noodles to help you float because they don't want your feet touching the ground because there's little jellyfish down there. The water is shallow about 4 or 5 ft

Response from the operator: Hi Chelsea, We’re thrilled you had such a cool experience exploring the Bioluminescent Bay with us in Grand Cayman! That glitter-like glow under the water really is something special, and we’re glad you felt safe and comfortable with the suits and float noodles. Thanks for choosing to spend your evening with us during your stay at The Kimpton Seafire—it means a lot! Don’t forget to share your glowing memories and tag us on Instagram or Facebook at @NextExperienceTravel so fellow travelers can discover the magic too Hope to see you again soon in the beautiful Caribbean! Grand Cayman Bioluminescent Bay and Starfish Point Tour: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Grand Cayman.

How much does Grand Cayman Bioluminescent Bay and Starfish Point Tour cost?

+

Prices start at $129 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Grand Cayman usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Grand Cayman Bioluminescent Bay and Starfish Point Tour take?

+

Plan for about 3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Grand Cayman is not rushed.

Is Grand Cayman Bioluminescent Bay and Starfish Point Tour worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 61 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.2/5 across 5 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Grand Cayman, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Grand Cayman Bioluminescent Bay and Starfish Point Tour?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Grand Cayman Bioluminescent Bay and Starfish Point Tour suitable for kids and families?

+

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Grand Cayman Bioluminescent Bay and Starfish Point Tour?

+

Around 2 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Grand Cayman can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Grand Cayman and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Grand Cayman Bioluminescent Bay and Starfish Point Tour start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Grand Cayman within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Grand Cayman?

+

On Outty we rank every Grand Cayman experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Small Group E-Bike Grand Cayman Ecological Half-Day Tour, Stingray City Experience Plus Two Snorkeling Stops on Grand Cayman, Stingray City Sandbar, Coral Gardens Snorkeling & Star Fish Point. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Grand Cayman?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Grand Cayman?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
