Gaumukh Tapovan trek - bad experience with HDT
I booked a tapovan trip through Himalayan dream treks. I was a solo traveler and some of the other firms were not offering single tent option - that was the main reason I went with them (Paid double the trip cost advertised). The owner Mr. Negi was communicative before the trek started. I was under the impression that the trek group would all be through them - however, when I reached Dehradun is when I realized that they had outsourced my trip to another company, which was a surprise to me. Unfortunately due to inclement weather, the hike was interrupted and we got stuck in Bhatwari as the road to Gangotri was closed. Mr.Negi offered me 50% back if I canceled the trip right there - but since I had paid a lot for all the travel etc (I had traveled from US for this), it didnt make sense for me to stop right there. I was also given the option to continue the travel with no refund. I decided to continue on to Gangotri, which we reached after 2 days, when the weather improved. However, the trek was still closed. At this point, Mr.Negi went completely incommunicado - tried calling him multiple times with no response. Finally I decided to return back as there was no hope of trek opening - but then the other company he had outsourced it to said they had no transport back (even though I had booked transportation with Mr. Negi). With no options left, I had to catch a public bus back from Gangotri, which was quite a bummer (they offered me a non-shared ride if I was willing to pay 7K, which I refused). Overall, I will not be using Himalayan Dream Treks again going forward. It is better to go directly with the 3rd party that they outsource to (I think they are called trek ventures) as they are boots on the ground and are cheaper too. The fact that my return transportation was left in a limbo state and I was not even able to talk to them left a pretty bad taste. Even after 4 days past the trip, I have not got any message asking what happened or whether I was able to get back safely. I also heard from the other group members (who had booked not through HDT) that they got some partial refund
Response from the operator: Dear Girish, Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. We are genuinely sorry that your experience did not meet your expectations. We would, however, like to clarify a few points for an accurate understanding of what happened. During your travel dates, there was extremely heavy snowfall and bad weather in the mountains. Several treks, including Gaumukh–Tapovan, were closed by the government authorities, and trekkers in the region even had to be rescued by helicopter. Unfortunately, this situation was completely beyond our control. We understand that you paid more than the normal trek price. However, your package included single-sharing accommodation, which is considerably more expensive in the mountains, especially during such difficult weather conditions. We also provided a dedicated guide, Shivam, from our team, who stayed with you in Gangotri until the end of your trip. Regarding transportation, your package was Gangotri to Gangotri and transport was additional. After it became clear that the trek would remain closed, we arranged a Tempo Traveller along with other participants to manage the transportation cost. Later, you chose shared public transport from Gangotri instead of a private vehicle. We completely respected your decision, as private transportation was not included in your package. After two nights in Bhatwari, it became clear that the trek would remain closed for the next few days. Other participants returned, while you chose to continue to Gangotri and stay there for another two nights. We supported this decision and continued providing your accommodation on a single-sharing basis along with guide support. When we realised that the trek was unlikely to reopen, we offered you a 50% refund as a goodwill gesture, even though this was not part of our standard cancellation policy. Unfortunately, the offer was declined. Regarding my absence, I sincerely apologise if you felt that I was not available when needed. I remained in contact with you during the first four days, after which I had to leave to lead another scheduled trek. As I also lead treks personally, there are occasions when I may not be available to answer every call immediately. However, our office team remained available, and Shivam was with you in Gangotri to coordinate your stay and return journey. We also returned calls whenever possible. We would also like to clarify that the trek was not outsourced to another agency. The transport was only coordinated with another group to manage costs. Your trek permit was issued under Himalayan Dream Treks, and the trek coordination, guide and other services were managed by our team. Regarding the refund, the services had already been provided and costs had already been incurred, including accommodation for approximately 4–5 nights, dedicated guide support and the trekking permit. Therefore, unfortunately, we are unable to provide any further refund. We genuinely understand your disappointment, especially after travelling such a long distance, and we are sorry that the weather prevented you from completing the trek. Bad management, no English, trip was shortened 1 day: no refund. Hike was beautiful so book with local.
Writing this on behalf of all the 6 individuals who booked the Gomukh-Tapovan trek (19-24 October 2024) to express our dissatisfaction with the following : 1. The trek was supposed to be a 5 day trek however on the first day of the trek, at Chirbasa campsite to be precise, we were informed that camping at Tapovan will not be possible because of scarcity of water. This is clearly concealment of facts and should have been informed well in advance so that we would have cancelled the trek altogether. It is an utter waste of time for us and a failure to deliver services as promised at your end. We had to rebook our train/plane/stays as we arrived one day earlier in Dehradun after the trek and did not get a refund for the last day we did not hike. 2. Unprofessional Management: The whole trek experience was managed with utter unprofessionalism. The transportation from Dehradun was pathetically slow and uncomfortable; a simple 10 hour long journey at most took about 14 hours to complete. Further, campsite at Chirbasa on day 1 was not setup even hours after reaching it, leaving all us in the cold, evidently highlighting the uncoordinated nature of the trek. Not to mention the difficulties encountered before starting our trek from Bhojbasa to Tapovan which may be elaborated by other group members. 3. The guide barely spoke any English and when he did it was often very rude. We were lucky our fellow group members would translate for us or we wouldn't even have known that sleeping at tapovan wasn't possible. 4. During trekking, the guide was often so far ahead or behind, it seemed we were just hiking on our own. 5 members descended alone from tapovan to gaumukh and further on the 6 of us walked without him to bhojbasa. That's a whole afternoon without the guide (if you could still call him that), if something had happened then, there was no possibility of us contacting anyone, that's totally irresponsible and unprofessional. It was like he had no experience at all and we had to explain to him how he should lead a group. 5. The circumstances in which the porters had to operate was dehumanizing. A shortage of porters led to carrying an overload without decent shoes, clothing and backpacks. Would definitely not recommend this organization to anyone.

However, as per the terms and conditions, the trek was completed up to the Tapovan summit. Due to a shortage of water at Tapovan, we were unable to camp there overnight, and our team informed you of this change at Chirbasa. Our team learned from another trekking group that had reached Tapovan and then returned to Bhojbasa for the night that there was no available water and no other trekking groups were camping there. Only one expedition team was using Tapovan as a base camp for Mt. Shivling, where they had been stationed for over 15 days. Given this situation, no other trekking groups stayed at Tapovan overnight. Despite multiple discussions with you, we noticed a recurring message from your side—requesting a refund in exchange for a positive review. We must respectfully inform you that while we aim to provide the best experience, a refund is not possible in this situation. The necessary arrangements and equipment for a 5-day trek were fully organized and transported, and our guide even suggested that we could continue for another day if possible from Tapovan.
