Visit the Colosseum with David Battaglino, not a random guide assigned by an agency. With more than 10 years of experience, you'll find Roman history entertaining, clear, and easy to understand—never a boring lecture delivered in difficult-to-follow English. This tour focuses exclusively on the Colosseum, rather than cramming the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill into a rushed 3 hour, 4-kilometer march. You will have time to absorb the stories, ask questions, enjoy the experience, and take photos without being hurried along. It’s ideal for everyone—families, solo travelers, couples, groups of friends, first-time visitors, and those returning to Rome who want to experience the Colosseum in a new way. My aim is to create more than just a tour: a welcoming group where complete strangers from around the world share the experience, and leave feeling as though they’ve spent two unforgettable hours with old friends.

What you'll see and do
Colosseum
Experience the Colosseum from the Arena floor—entering through the historic “Gate of Death” to get the same perspective a gladiator would have had. We will explore the arena floor, as well as the ground and first levels of the Colosseum. If you're looking for a guide who recites facts, or simply just to “skip the line”, there are plenty of options. If you're looking for someone who can help you understand ancient Rome while keeping you entertained from beginning to end, I'd love to show you around. BONUS: One week before the tour, you’ll receive your timed Colosseum ticket, which also grants one‑time access to the Roman Forum & Palatine Hill—the world’s largest in‑city archaeological site (30 hectares!). * Access includes the exclusive “SUPER” sites. * Plan at least 3 hours to explore it properly * Your entry is valid from 2:00 PM the day before the Colosseum tour until 2:00 PM the day after. Once you exit, re‑entry is not permitted without purchasing a new ticket (€18).

We can 100% recommend David for this tour. He is extremely knowledgeable and his witty delivery makes the tour a fantastic experience.

Fantastic tour guide!
David was one of the most animated and knowledgeable tour guides I've had the pleasure of experiencing. He we exceptionally entertaining during the tour and painted wonderful images of how the arena would have operated back in the day. He had phenomenal tactics to get you the best photo opportunities within the arena as well. I normally prefer to wander on my own rather than do a tour, but I would gladly book another tour with him. His tour was well worth the money.

Best tour guide in all of Rome! You won't be bored to tears like you would be with the others!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ We had an absolutely fantastic experience on our Colosseum and San Clemente guided tour, and David was a huge part of what made it so memorable! I’ll be the first to admit that I normally do not enjoy history or historical tours at all, so I honestly wasn’t expecting this to be one of the highlights of our trip—but David completely changed that. He was extremely knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the history, but what really set him apart was the way he presented everything. He was witty, engaging, funny, and somehow managed to make all of the history genuinely interesting without ever making it feel like a lecture. There was never a point where I felt bored or like I was just being overloaded with dates and facts. David brought the stories and places to life and kept us entertained the entire time. I actually found myself wanting to know more, which says a lot coming from someone who normally has very little interest in historical things! The Colosseum was incredible, and San Clemente was absolutely fascinating. Having David there to explain what we were seeing added so much to the experience. If you’re considering either of these tours, I highly recommend it—and if you can get David as your guide, even better. He was fantastic and made the tour one of the most enjoyable and unexpected highlights of our time in Rome!

38 countries visited, and this is my favorite tour ever!
Finding an English-language tour of the Collosseum is very hard, as the big agencies buy up all the tickets and resell them. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but we were both absolutely blown away by our tour. First, David is 100% real-deal Italian, but his mom is From England, so the usual added stress of trying to understand a guide with an accent disappeared. Not only was David knowledgeable, but his no-nonsense sense of humor won the entire tour group over. I remember him picking off dopey TV and movie tropes while telling us the real stories, stories that, without any exaggeration, brought me to tears. When we left the Collosseum and went out into the forum, David sat us under some trees and brought those ruins alive for us. When he mentioned that he had a second tour he could offer in a couple of hours and asked if anyone wanted to join, literally the entire group of former-strangers raised their hands as one. On the spot, this guy arranged cheap and convenient private transport for all of us, and being in the Pantheon at closing time, watching them close those massive doors with one hand brought a thrill that one just has to experience to understand. I actually took this tour a few years ago, and have recommended David to every person we know who is visiting Rome. Those who listened to us returned thanking us profusely. Give David a shot…you’ll be thanking us too!

Why this scores 63
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Gate of Death Colosseum Arena Walking Tour: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Rome.
How much does Gate of Death Colosseum Arena Walking Tour cost?
+
Prices start at $86 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Rome usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Gate of Death Colosseum Arena Walking Tour take?
+
Plan for about 1.8 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Rome is not rushed.
Is Gate of Death Colosseum Arena Walking Tour worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 63 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 14 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most popular in Rome, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Gate of Death Colosseum Arena Walking Tour?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Gate of Death Colosseum Arena Walking Tour suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 1.8-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Gate of Death Colosseum Arena Walking Tour?
+
Around 5 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Rome can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Rome and add a light layer if any part of the 1.8-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Gate of Death Colosseum Arena Walking Tour start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Rome within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Rome?
+
Rome runs on skip-the-line access. The Colosseum underground, the Vatican before opening, and the catacombs south of the walls all require a licensed operator, and the price gap between the good ones and the rest is smaller than you would expect. We rank by guide credentials, group size and how reliably the promised access actually materialises. On Outty we rank every Rome experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Rome Pizza & Gelato Class with Wine by Cooking Italy, Rome [4in1] Pasta Making_Tiramisù_Wine Tasting_Secret Cellar, Rome Pasta and Tiramisu Class: Ravioli, Fettuccine & Fine Wine 5*. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Rome?
+
April, May, September and October. August is hot and half the city is shut. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Rome?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
