What you'll see and do

  1. Tromso

We specialize in guided tours. We drive wherever the Northern Lights are to be located and we strive to find places where the northern lights are strong and clear, and with the help of both long experience and technology, the chances of finding the northern lights at their brightest, are increased. Our goal is to find the northern lights, therefor we travel all over Tromsø and also sometimes Finland chasing it. If the northern lights dosnt appear rigth away we we will make stops at certain landmarks to take photos, experience the wonderful nature, and sometimes we are lucky and can stop nearby reindeers. When the conditions dictate it and we have found the best place to enjoy the northern lights, we have a longer stop where we make a fire and serve some hot/cold drinks and some snacks.

Save your money and do not book with this agency

I strongly advise against booking with this agency. I paid over €1,200, and the service we received was nowhere near what was promised or expected for that price. We were very concerned about the weather, as all forecasts showed 100% cloud cover. We even emailed the company before the start, but they insisted on going ahead. It felt like they just wanted to collect the money regardless of the conditions. Unsurprisingly, we saw nothing. What made the experience even worse was the poor quality of the service: No professional guide: We didn't have a guide to explain anything. We only had a driver who could barely speak English, making communication almost impossible. Shortened trip: They brought us back 90 minutes earlier than scheduled. While other agencies were out there trying their best until 2:00 AM, this one gave up early. To top it off, their customer service is non-existent. When we tried to reach out to find a solution, they sent a generic template and then ignored our following emails. We did a second tour with a different company, and the difference in quality and honesty was night and day. Save your money and find a more professional agency that actually respects its customers.

Response from the operator: Thank you for your review and for sharing your experience. We’re sorry to hear that you were disappointed and that the tour did not meet your expectations. Before each tour, we carefully check the weather forecast and the aurora activity. Even if Tromsø is very cloudy, there are often nearby areas with less clouds, which is why the tour went ahead. If the weather is unsafe and we cannot drive, we cancel the tour. When we confirm a tour, it means we believe there is still a chance to see the Northern Lights. As clearly explained in our information, the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon and cannot be guaranteed. Our tours are led by experienced local drivers whose main focus is to look for the best possible conditions. We understand that different companies offer different styles of guiding and services, and we’re sorry if this was not what you expected. Sometimes the tour can return earlier if conditions do not improve during the night. We’re also sorry that our email reply felt impersonal. We try to reply to all messages and apply the same policies to all guests. We appreciate your feedback and are sorry that your experience was not a positive one. We wish you all the best and hope you still enjoyed your time in Tromsø.

The worst experience in Tromsø - Better and cheaper options available

DO NOT BOOK WITH THIS AGENCY! My family and I had a really bad experience with this agency. While it is true that the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon they cannot guarantee, the way they treated us as customers was extremely disappointing. We did a second tour with another company later on, and the quality of service was completely different—way better and even cheaper. If you want to know in more detail what happened to us, see below: Even though the day was completely cloudy, they decided not to cancel the tour after our inquiry via email a couple of hours before the start. Of course, no Northern Lights were seen. While some companies offer a 10/20% discount for a second attempt, they didn't even offer us that after we got in touch. They answered our email with a generic template and then completely ignored our follow-up. As if that weren't enough, the service itself was very poor: 1° No guide, only a driver: Unlike other companies where a professional guide explains the science behind the Auroras and the plan for the night, we only had a driver who had great difficulty communicating in English. We felt completely uninformed throughout the night. 2° Poor catering: They only provided half a glass of juice and a small piece of cake. Other companies in Tromsø provide a variety of options, hot meals, and the possibility of seconds. 3° Early return: They returned from the tour 1 hour and a half earlier than what is stated in the description. Meanwhile, other companies try their best and keep searching until almost 2:00 AM. For €1,705 (the price we paid for 7 tickets), this service is a complete rip-off. Save your money and book with someone who actually cares about their guests.

Response from the operator: Thank you for sharing the time to share your feedback. We are truly sorry to hear that your experience did not meet your expectations. Before every tour, we carefully check both the weather forecast and the aurora activity. On the day of the tour, there were chances of seeing the Northern Lights, which is why the tour was confirmed. Please note that even if it is cloudy in Tromsø. there are often areas nearby with clearer or partially clear skies. If weather conditions are unsafe and we cannot drive, the tour is canceled. If we confirm that the tour is running, it means conditions allow us to operate. The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon and cannot be guaranteed. For this reason, we unfortunately do not offer refunds if the aurora is not visible. This policy applies equally to all guests. Our tours are led be experienced local drivers whose main focus is to find the best possible conditions. The service included such as guiding, food, and tour length are different for each company. Sometimes the tour can return earlier if conditions are not better during the night, and guests agree. We are sorry that our communication felt impersonal to you and that you felt disappointed overall. Your feedback is taken seriously and helps us to improve. We wish you all the best and are glad that you eventually had a positive experience elsewhere.

Simply Superb, the guide cum driver took us to Nice spots where we could see the Aurora very clearly, amazing it was!!! Also the camp fire was arranged, bread was delicious and the hot grape juice was tasty, very ideal for the chilly weather at night. Misleading advertising

The tour wasn’t as described below. -Food and beverage wasn’t included, we were actually charged NOK 45 per hot dog -Pictures weren’t included nor taken -No clothing were provided -We paid for guide and transport but no guide service was provided We drove around through very bad weather instead of offering an alternative as described on terms and conditions. When we finally got to an open spot we drove back before we could see any lights. The driver the stopped 45 minutes at a random destination claiming he was not permitted to continue driving. We understand that the sight of lights are not guaranteed, but the service delivered was none like advertised.

Our guide Niko's enthusiasm and effort helped us to witness northern lights despite the terribly bad weather!

Huge thanks to Niko for helping us to witness the northern lights! Our guide Niko was super enthusiastic about chasing northern lights for us even when it had been raining/snowing practically the entire few days we were in Tromso. We've heard anecdotes of either cancelled tours or the guides essentially just drove the tours out a little before giving up. Niko however was extremely positive and spent hours driving us into Finland (~200km away) even though our small group had zero expectation due to the bad weather. He was constantly checking out the skies and their fellow guides chat group along the way, before we found a spot with clear sighting of stars. Despite the long driving, we were very well taken care of by Niko, making sure we have warmth by setting up a mini campsite and serving us delicious Christmas drinks and homemade snacks! In contrast, another group arrived slightly before us were just walking around, before they gave up after 10 mins or so, and headed back to Tromso. After we were warmly settled in, the sky cleared up with more and brighter stars. Around 30 mins or so wait, we started to see dim streaks of northern lights and the magic begun! The whole experience lasted around 30-45 mins, and Niko helped us to take extremely beautiful photos (without filter!). While it wasn't the strongest and most beautiful northern light, we were extremely thankful to Niko for the chance to be able to witness it at all. We started at 7pm and ended back in Tromso at 3am, a testament to Niko's dedication in trying his best to get our money's worth in chasing the northern lights. All in all, highly recommend Northernlight.guide, especially if your guide is Niko.

Response from the operator: Takk for fine ord

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Tromso and add a light layer if any part of the 4-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Tromso?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
