   The Colossi of Memnon are two massive stone statues of the Pharaoh Amenhotep III, located in Thebes (modern-day Luxor), Egypt - The colossi were built around 1350 BC and originally guarded the entrance to Amenhotep III's memorial temple. - Each statue stands approximately 60 feet (18 meters) tall and weigh an estimated 720 tons. - The statues depict Amenhotep III seated on a throne, with his hands resting on his knees in a typical pose for Egyptian royal statues. - The colossi were carved from blocks of quartzitic sandstone, likely quarried from Gebel el-Ahmar near Cairo. - In antiquity, the colossi were once part of a larger funerary complex, but most of the other structures were destroyed over time. - One of the famous features of the Colossi is that for centuries, one of the statues was believed to "sing" at dawn, emitting a musical tone. This was likely caused by temperature changes causing the stone to expand and contract.
