What you'll see and do
Belmeken Dam
The Mountain Adventure (Belmeken & Retro Train) Escape the modern world for a journey into the "Bulgarian Alps." We begin our day with a drive to the majestic Belmeken Lake. Situated at 1,900m in Rila, this high-altitude reservoir offers one of the most stunning alpine panoramas in the Balkans. It is a place of absolute peace, crisp air, and rugged peaks—the perfect introduction to the wild heart of Bulgaria. After soaking in the views, we descend to Avramovo, the highest railway station in the Balkans at 1,267m. Here, you board the legendary Narrow-Gauge Retro Train. This is not just a commute; it is a slow-travel masterpiece ranked by The Guardian as one of Europe’s top 10 most scenic rail journeys. Over the next 1.2 hours, you will wind through spiral tunnels, cross mountain bridges, and witness a lifestyle in the mountain villages that has remained unchanged for decades. Your train ticket is pre-booked, allowing you to simply relax and enjoy the nostalgic heritage atmosphere.

Velingrad
Summer Relaxation (Thermal Outdoor Pools) Note: Available May to September. After descending from the mountain heights, we transition to the "Thermal Capital of the Balkans"—Velingrad. For those seeking relaxation, this option offers an afternoon in the region’s famous outdoor thermal mineral pools. These are not crowded city pools; we select authentic outdoor locations where you can soak in the healing, naturally hot waters while surrounded by the fresh scent of the Rhodope pine forests. This experience is designed to be rustic and refreshing. There is nothing quite like the contrast of the cool mountain air and the warm, mineral-rich waters. We have pre-arranged your entry fees, so you can walk straight in, find your spot under the sun, and let the stress of daily life melt away. It is the perfect natural "reset" before we make our way back to Sofia. Please remember to bring your swimwear and a towel to enjoy this natural Bulgarian wellness tradition at its best.

Karabunar
Cultural Sophistication (Boutique Wine Tasting) Our wine option takes you into the prestigious Thracian Valley wine region. This area is the gateway to Bulgarian viticulture, home to a history of winemaking that dates back to the ancient Thracians. We visit a boutique winery near Velingrad that specializes in high-quality, small-batch production and the preservation of indigenous Bulgarian grape varieties. You will be guided through a professional tasting of premium wines, with a special focus on the bold and spicy Mavrud—a grape that grows nowhere else in the world. The tasting is held in a curated setting and is paired with local appetizers (meze) to enhance the flavors. You will learn about the unique terroir of the valley and the modern revival of Bulgarian wine. Because we have pre-arranged the tasting fee and selection, you can focus entirely on the storytelling and the bouquet of the wines. It is a sophisticated, elegant conclusion to a day of mountain exploration.

Amazing experience highly recommend
Highlight of our holiday, amazing day spend with Dobrin, must do activity to see the real beauty of Rila Mountains in the snow. Dobrin is extremely knowledgeable of the area and enthusiastic about the experience. He is very patient, letting us go at our own pace and stop regularly to enjoy the snow and scenery. Dobrin was very easy to communicate with and prompt on all comms. He was also great in helping us organise other non skilled activities. We all recommend spending the day with “Dob’s”
Response from the operator: Thank you so much for the kind words. Highly appreciate it! Best regards Dobrin

From Sofia: Scenic Retro Train, Belmeken Lake & Wine/Thermal: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Sofia.
How much does From Sofia: Scenic Retro Train, Belmeken Lake & Wine/Thermal cost?

Prices start at $95 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Sofia usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does From Sofia: Scenic Retro Train, Belmeken Lake & Wine/Thermal take?

Is From Sofia: Scenic Retro Train, Belmeken Lake & Wine/Thermal worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 61 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 4 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Sofia, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule From Sofia: Scenic Retro Train, Belmeken Lake & Wine/Thermal?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is From Sofia: Scenic Retro Train, Belmeken Lake & Wine/Thermal suitable for kids and families?
+

How far in advance should I book From Sofia: Scenic Retro Train, Belmeken Lake & Wine/Thermal?
+
Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Sofia can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Sofia and add a light layer if any part of the 11-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does From Sofia: Scenic Retro Train, Belmeken Lake & Wine/Thermal start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Sofia within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Sofia?
+
On Outty we rank every Sofia experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Communist Walking Tour of Sofia, Sofia Highlights 2 Hour Sightseeing Walking Tour, Sofia Escape Room - Teorema Rooms. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Sofia?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Sofia?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
