Hanoi’s French quarter, the grid of streets south of Hoan Kiem Lake, is unique amongst Asian capital cities. It is packed with buildings from different eras in the city’s history. It features ancient pagodas; classical European architecture; international modernist architecture (avant-garde Art Deco residences) as well as a fusion between Asian and French style architecture. Each of these styles is a tangible sign of the ideological shifts, which have influenced Vietnamese culture over the centuries. Much more than just bricks and mortar, they are monuments to the vision of French, Vietnamese and Soviet thinkers and architects.

Wonderful day
We were so fortunate to have Nikita as our guide around the French Quarter. Her warmth, knowledge of history and architecture, as well as sharing of family stories made this a special experience. The three and half hour tour was interspersed with stops ( we would never have found ourselves) for tea, coffee and Ban Mai. Thank you Nikita for this memorable day

Walking Tour, Hanoi Old Town
Nikita gave us a fantastic tour of Hanoi’s Old Town, with coffees and snacks included in the price. Highly recommended.

Hanoi's upscale neighborhood
Very interesting to see the contrast of a sophisticated neighborhood, with wide sidewalks and chic stores, compared to the popular stores and sidewalks full of motorbikes in the center of Hanoi! Worth the trip!

Informative, interesting walking tour in Hanoi
I went on the French Quarter walking tour. This was one of the best things I did in Hanoi. I learned A LOT about the the history of the city from a local guide. We saw a lot in the French Quarter, but also a couple areas near by. We enjoyed coffee and Banh Mi after. This is a great way to both learn and see more of Hanoi from a knowledgeable guide. Highly recommend this if you are in Hanoi!

+
The operator sets a minimum age of 6. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 3-hour running time when deciding.
How far in advance should I book French Quarter Tour?
+
Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Hanoi can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+

The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Hanoi?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Hanoi?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
