Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore
The cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (Visit from outside), with its beautiful dome projected by Brunelleschi, is the cathedral of Florence. 1296 , Gothic style to a design of Arnolfo di Cambio and was structurally completed by 1436, with the dome designed by Filippo Brunelleschi. The exterior of the basilica is faced with polychrome marble panels in various shades of green and pink, bordered by white, and has an elaborate 19th-century Gothic Revival façade by Emilio De Fabris.

Battistero Di San Giovanni
the Baptistery of San Giovanni (visit outside) is located in Piazza Duomo, in front of the Cathedral of S. Maria del Fiore, it is one of the most important monuments in Florence. The origins of the monument are not certain. It is thought to have been built on the ruins of an ancient Roman temple dedicated to the God Mars around the 4th-5th century AD. The first mention dates back to 897 when it was referred to as a basilica. In 1128 it officially became the city's baptistery, where the baptism rite took place. The baptistery, named after the patron saint of the city, is characterized by an octagonal plan, covered by a dome with eight segments covered on the outside by a pyramid roof. The exterior of the building is decorated with white Carrara marble and green Prato marble, characteristic of Florentine Romanesque architecture.

Campanile di Giotto
Adjacent to the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is the Bell Tower designed by Giotto (visit outside). Giotto's Bell Tower is the majestic bell tower of the Cathedral and one of the masterpieces of Italian Gothic. The Bell Tower has a square base of approximately 15 meters per side with corner reinforcements that rise up to the horizontal cantilevered crown located at a height of 84.7 metres.

Piazza della Signoria
Piazza della Signoria has been at the center of Florence's political life since the 14th century. The Square has seen important historical events and great triumphs take place, such as the return of the Medici in 1530. The famous sculptures located in Piazza della Signoria have references to the political events of Florence. The David (the original is located in the Accademia Gallery) was created by Michelangelo and positioned in front of Palazzo Vecchio to symbolize the power of the Florentine Republic in contrast with the tyranny of the Medici. Hercules and Cacus (1534) by Bandinelli instead symbolizes the physical power of the family.

Ponte Vecchio
Built near a Roman-era crossing, the Ponte Vecchio was until 1218 the only bridge that crossed the Arno in Florence. Above Ponte Vecchio you can see a part of the beautiful Vasari Corridor. This corridor, built in 1565 by Giorgio Vasari, passes just above the goldsmith shops that currently stand on either side of the bridge. Commissioned by the Medici, it allowed them to move from Palazzo Vecchio to Palazzo Pitti without having to cross the streets of Florence, in complete safety. At the time of the construction of the Corridor, the butchers' shops were gathered on the Ponte Vecchio, whose activity probably disturbed the passage of the Medici, who in 1593 had them moved, replacing them with the more "decorous" goldsmith shops.

Awesome! Just perfect!
Maria was fantastic! This was a phenomenal experience to travel to Florence by train for the day. Worry free pick up from the hotel, and shuttled to the train station. Maria was extremely knowledgeable, and she took the time to listen to our interest prior to arriving. Her recommendations were perfectly suited for us! As her teammate, Giovanni is a professional local guide, and he gave us so much knowledge of Florence. We had plenty of time throughout the day to take refreshments breaks. The restaurant we stopped for lunch was exceptional! Over all the one on one experience was amazing thanks to Maria and her team. For a day trip to Florence it was above and beyond our expectations. I recommend this to anyone wanting the best experience possible. There's no doubt it's a long day, and the energy and excitement of our guides to explore the city was contagious. We loved it!

Enjoyed our day trip to Florence very much!
Enjoyed our day trip to Florence very much! Juliana was our guide for entire day, while Eleanor, an artistic guide, dovetailed well into Juliana’s experience giving us a heightened enjoyment of Florence. A nice touch for first timers in Italy, Juliana (by taxi) picked us up at the Rome Garden Hotel, helping us navigate our way through the train station platforms, screens, and schedules. It was our first time on a high-speed train. The ride to Florence was enjoyable, catching country-side scenes, farms, and small villages along the way. Once in Florence, we walked considerably and took a lot of pictures; Juliana obliged, snapping many of the pictures of us with our camera. Exploring the streets, sights and churches of Florence, we were asked about things we would like to see or do. The landscape of downtown Florence was amazing, including beautiful sights at every turn and even a large Central Market, which was enjoyable. After lunch at the Trattoria Vecchio Mercato restaurant, we met up with Eleanor, beginning first with a tour of the Accademia Gallery. Probably our favorite work of art in the Gallery, was the 16-foot Statue of David, created by Michelangelo, in 1501 to 1504. He was 26 years old at the time the statue was completed. Something we had never realized were the accompanying three additional statues of David by Michelangelo, each in an unfinished state, depicting the human soul striving to break free of the flesh. The tour with Eleanor continued into the Piazza della Signoria, where a full-sized replica of the Statue of David, had been placed there in 1910. We continued our tour of the history of Florence, including other works of art and building structures. Again, Juliana and Eleanor made a great team. Completing our tour after another satisfying ride on the high-speed train, and taxi back to our hotel, we said our goodbyes.

Tiring and long but not boring
It was our first time in Italy and first time in Rome. So having a “chaperone” guide accompanying us all the way from Rome to Florence and back on the high speed train tour was very helpful, especially with language translation. We were very comfortable with Rashe and felt taken care of. She gave good insight into the culture and norms of Italy as we strolled through the streets while waiting for our Florence guide to give us the arts and history tour. The Florence guide, Alessandra, had an amazing knowledge of history and the arts. She gave us time to stop and admire the various art works and architecture of buildings. She could even answer all our questions. The downside is that the time spent was a bit long. We wish we could have met the Florence guide first and complete the arts and history tour first before lunch and then walk around the town a bit before heading back to Rome. Would have preferred to leave Florence at 5pm.

We loved our day trip to Florence from Rome! And, we especially loved the train ride. It was our first time taking the train while traveling in Italy, and we would do it again in a heartbeat. The walking tour in Florence was really nice, and we thoroughly enjoyed the restaurant the guide recommended for lunch. Florence is such a beautiful city! I think my husband and I will go back and stay for a longer visit. One day just wasn't enough. Highly recommend this tour!
