    About this experience

It is rare to have the experience of processing raw fish from the beginning.By processing fish and eating it as sashimi yourself, you can deepen your enjoyment of food and understanding of Japanese food culture. It is a lot of fun to process fish, and the fish you process yourself tastes better than anything else! I have been working in a fish shop for 20 years and have studied how to process various kinds of fish. We will use this experience to carefully teach you how to process fish. Fun and different slill to learn

Something quite different to try out hands at. Totally absorbed in the task at hand that we didn't notice the busy market street around us. Great to learn the basics of preparing fish and then making a wonderful sushi and sahimi platter for lunch. Loved the experience.

    Must do for cooks!

I had an incredible experience cutting fish at this authentic fish shop at Nishiki market! I learned new cutting techniques and the fish we got to eat after was delicious. The teacher was very patient and the atmosphere and environment were great :) Highly recommend!

    11/10 Experience

My husband and I took a sashimi class with Masashi back in May 2025. We were here on our honeymoon and of our two week stay in Japan, this was one of the highlights of our trip! It was a small, intimate class with 5 participants in the back room of the stall in the Nishiki Market, which fully immersed us in the experience. Masashi effortlessly walked us step by step through the process of preparing two different fish, encouraging us throughout the learning process. Neither of us had ever done a class like this before and we left feeling like professionals! The fish was fresh and delicious, and the portions were more than generous (Tempura was a lovely bonus). We had an excellent time getting to know Masashi and his wife, as well as learn from his experience. The following day we wandered into Nishiki Market to check out the other stalls, and we saw Masashi working. He excitedly remembered us, invited us to come and sit, and we enjoyed some additional fish! He and the staff truly made us feel like old friends with the hospitality they showed, and I would recommend this class to anyone and everyone! If you are traveling between cities during your stay in Japan, we recommend ensuring you get one Sunday in Kyoto so you can book this class.

If you cook and want to improve your knife skills, this one is a must.

If you like to cook do this tour. We had learned so much about fish preparation and had a tasty lunch that we had prepared ourselves. Unique chance to learn from a Japanese fishmonger and we absolutely loved this! The class takes place in the market in a historic building and you will walk away glad to have learned new skills. If you are no good at fish preparation like me, you still won’t be disappointed because you will at least understand where you might need to work on your knife skills and honestly, sashimi made by yourself is quite a special experience.

Fish Cutting workshop in Kyoto Japan: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Kyoto.

How much does Fish Cutting workshop in Kyoto Japan cost?

    +

Prices start at $96 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Kyoto usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Fish Cutting workshop in Kyoto Japan take?

    +

Plan for about 2.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Kyoto is not rushed.

Is Fish Cutting workshop in Kyoto Japan worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 73 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 17 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Kyoto, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Fish Cutting workshop in Kyoto Japan?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Fish Cutting workshop in Kyoto Japan suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 2.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Fish Cutting workshop in Kyoto Japan?

    +

Around 6 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Kyoto can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Kyoto and add a light layer if any part of the 2.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Fish Cutting workshop in Kyoto Japan start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Kyoto within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Kyoto?

    +

On Outty we rank every Kyoto experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Kyoto : Gion Make Your Own Chopsticks with Engraving Option, Award-Winning Authentic Ramen Making Experience in Kyoto, Hidden Kyoto E-Biking tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Kyoto?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Kyoto?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
