Alert of a bad experience with Black Travel
"The 4 Islands tour experience fell short of expectations. It involved two different teams: the first was polite and attentive, but the second was very disrespectful, using aggressive language and rudely rushing everyone to get on and off the boat—even though there was an elderly woman in our group. To make matters worse, when dropping us off at the hotel, the driver missed the stop without warning and then argued with the seven people who were left behind. The company might claim they weren't the ones running the tour, but that isn't true. I've read reviews from other people regarding Black Travel where the company claimed they weren't responsible for the tour either. I do not recommend booking tours with Black Travel."

A Soul-Stirring Journey into Living History
Visiting the first free slave village in the Americas was an experience I’ll never forget. Beyond the historical significance, there is a tangible sense of pride and resilience in Palenque. I left feeling deeply inspired by the stories of Benkos Biohó and the preserved traditions of the community. If you want to understand the true roots of Colombian culture, this is a must-visit. It’s more than a tour; it’s an education for the soul and future.
Response from the operator: Thank you for trusting us; our company strives to offer the best services in the city of Cartagena.

A must-see cultural trip in Palenque San Bacilio
A must-see cultural trip in Palenque de San Basilio! Visiting Palenque de San Basilio was an incredibly enriching experience. Learning about the history and traditions of the Palenquero people, the first free people in America, left me with deep admiration for their struggle and resistance. Our Local Guide was fantastic, sharing stories and details about your community that are not found in the books. An essential destination if you are looking to learn about the true essence of Afro-Colombian culture!
Response from the operator: Me alegra que hayas disfrutado de tu actividad

Culture, music and tradition in Palenque
! I loved the visit to Palenque de San Basilio. The music, dances, and stories we heard transported us back to a time when the struggle for freedom was constant. Our Guide was amazing, taught us Palenque words, and we learned a lot about the African roots of this community. I recommend this tour to anyone interested in Afro-Colombian culture and the history of freedom in America.
Response from the operator: Me alegra que hayas disfrutado de tu actividad

Why this scores 61
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Experience at the First Free Slave Village of Palenque: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Cartagena.
How much does Experience at the First Free Slave Village of Palenque cost?
+
Prices start at $120 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Cartagena usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Experience at the First Free Slave Village of Palenque take?
+
Plan for about 8.3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Cartagena is not rushed.
Is Experience at the First Free Slave Village of Palenque worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 61 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.6/5 across 7 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Cartagena, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Experience at the First Free Slave Village of Palenque?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Experience at the First Free Slave Village of Palenque suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 8.3-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Experience at the First Free Slave Village of Palenque?
+
Around 2 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Cartagena can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Cartagena and add a light layer if any part of the 8.3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Experience at the First Free Slave Village of Palenque start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Cartagena within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Cartagena?
+
On Outty we rank every Cartagena experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Historic Center & Getsemaní Shared Tour in Cartagena, Cartagena VIP Boat Tour: Rosario Islands & Snorkel, Cartagena Antigua & Barrio Getsemani group with audio system. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Cartagena?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Cartagena?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
