Sitting on the original site where St. Mungo built his first church in 614 A.D., it’s safe to say there’s an extremely ancient history in this city. In fact, many people believe Edinburgh is an older city, but St. Margaret’s Cathedral in Edinburgh is actually younger than the Glasgow Cathedral you see today, which was built in the 12th Century.

Right at the heart of Glasgow, George Square is somewhere you absolutely have to see. Throughout the square, you’ll find many statues of famous Scottish politicians, literalists, military personnel and royalty. Perhaps the most notable part of George Square is the Glasgow City Chambers. On a weekday, you are allowed to go inside and marvel at the 3-storey marble staircase - which we believe rivals The Vatican’s two-storey staircase. The architecture around the square is actually very similar to America, and that’s why it’s been used by major Hollywood films such as Fast & Furious and World War Z.

Finnieston Crane
As you travel out of the city centre, you’ll spot the Finnieston Crane dramatically silhouetted against the River Clyde. It’s an icon for the Scottish shipbuilding industry - although it was never used to build ships. It was actually used for lifting extremely large items onto ships - like locomotives and steam trains. Around the Finnieston area, you’ll get to witness ‘Modern Glasgow’ with the SECC and The Hydro, a central place for music and arts.

Built in 1901, Kelvingrove Art Gallery is not only a sensational building architecturally, but also with its wealth of information and history. Please note: The People’s Palace is currently closed for an exciting refurbishment project. It is due to reopen in 2027. Therefore it will not be possible to visit the inside of the venue.

Glasgow Full Day Tour
We loved our full day tour of Glasgow. While we couldn't see everything we wanted to, we got a great overview of the city and saw lots of lesser known spots our guide knew. The tour was easily structured to fit in specific sites that interested us, such as the Mackintosh Church, Home for Art Lovers, etc. Our guide recommended a remarkable place for lunch and took us through Glasgow University- a highlight we hadn't considered. This was our fourth Hopscotch tour and if we return, I'm sure we'll use them again! Having been shown the city by our guide, we also had a much better idea of how to spend our remaining time in Glasgow on our own. We were staying in Glasgow- as such there is no specific tour listed for us to choose for this review. We also used Hopscotch for a full day tour in Edinburgh and a two day tour of Skye.

Amazing Glasgow Tour from Edinburgh
We had an incredible tour with Michael. He promptly picked us up from our hotel, and from the start, his passion for Glasgow’s history was contagious. He shared a remarkable wealth of knowledge throughout the day, making it a truly unique experience. Michael took us to far more places than we could have covered on our own in a single rainy day, and he was very flexible, happily letting us spend extra time exploring Kelvingrove Art Gallery when we wanted to. He made a reservation for us at a place that serves delicious, authentic Scottish food. As introverts, we were a little concerned that a private tour might feel tiring, but it was quite the opposite. Michael is warm, friendly, and easy to talk to, and even our teenagers were engaged the whole time. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide or a better tour.

Day touring after a cruise
A group of 6 used Hopscotch Tours for a private guided day of touring after arriving into Edinburgh from a cruise. We were met at the port by Andrew who took us to several top sights and even pre-booked a table at a popular delicious pub. He talked about all of the area we traveled to, answered all of our questions and was so patient.
