    Cycling through Matera

My partner and I took the e-bike tour, and we were lucky enough to do it with Gianni, a Matera native, former teacher, and now a tour guide. Once we got comfortable with the electric bike, we started our tour. We saw the first public housing units given to the people of Matera who came from the Sassi. We stopped at a quarry with local depictions and then moved on to visit a very particular church, to which a crypt is connected. We had the chance to enter both (they are connected inside), to visit them carefully, and to go down to the cellar of the crypt, passing through the refectory and the ancient oven area. We then set off again on our bikes toward the remains of a Neolithic village. We paused to look at the morphology of the village, complete with a detailed explanation, and we also learned about the local wild herbs. We then moved on to the caves that are opposite Matera, visiting the most interesting ones, capturing their various nuances, and observing Matera from another perspective. The tour lasted 3 hours, but they flew by! Gianni's explanations, precise and detailed, and the balanced and stimulating tour, allowed us to spend a morning in total relaxation, taking home a piece of the history of this place that is unique in the world. Experience recommended to anyone; don't be scared off by the “3 hours” because I can guarantee you that they are well-paced between the various stops and the related explanations.
