About this experience
Begin your day with a guide meeting at your hotel and embark on a scenic three-hour drive from Cairo to Alexandria. Upon arrival, explore the Kom El Shoqafa necropolis, an ancient burial site with a unique blend of Pharaonic, Greek, and Roman elements. The catacombs, dating back to the 2nd century AD, feature a circular staircase used for body transport and were rediscovered in 1900. Next, visit Pompey's Pillar, a 30-meter red granite column erected around 300 AD in honor of Emperor Diocletian. Despite its name, it has no connection to the Roman Consul Pompey. The pillar stands on the site of the Serapeum, an ancient temple destroyed in 391 AD by a Christian mob led by patriarch Theophilus. Today, only the pillar remains of this grand structure, with nearby tunnels and artifacts on display in the Greco-Roman Museum. Conclude your tour at the Citadel of Qaitbay, a 15th-century fortress established by Sultan Al-Ashraf Sayf al-Din Qa'it Bay

What you'll see and do
Pompey's Pillar
The second attraction is Pompey's Pillar. Despite its name, this 30-meter red Aswan granite column has no link to Pompey. Crusaders mistakenly believed it marked his burial site, but it was erected around 300 AD for Emperor Diocletian. The site was originally the Serapeum, Alexandria's acropolis, dedicated to the god Serapis. In 391 AD, Christian patriarch Theophilus led a mob to destroy the Serapeum and other pagan symbols, possibly including the Great Library of Alexandria. Today, only the pillar remains of the once-grand temple. Visitors can explore nearby tunnels and see artifacts like a life-size black basalt bull and a golden plaque at the Greco-Roman Museum.

Phenomenal!
We had a phenomenal experience touring Alexandria!!! Highly recommend visiting here. Our tour guide Manal was exceptional! She was very knowledgable, professional and patient. Allowed us plenty of time to explore each sight and answered all of our questions. Our driver Hussein was also amazing. Very safe and efficient driver who answered all our questions about the countryside as we drove the 2.5 hours from Cairo! We spent one day but I could easily spend more time as there is plenty to see. A must see place!

A special mention to our driver, Ahmed — despite the long hours on the road, the ride was impressively smooth. He was extremely vigilant, professional, and made safety a top priority, which really helped us relax and enjoy the trip. His calm and steady driving made a huge difference. Overall, it was a fun, memorable, and well-organized tour. Highly recommend!

A great experience tailored to our wishes!
The day trip was well organized and exactly tailored to what we had suggested we wanted to see (e.g. the lesser known birthplace of the Greek Poet Kavafi). Both, guide and driver were really polite, friendly and handled everything competently. Besides, the lunch we went for was amazing! Thanks a lot!

+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 61 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 4 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Cairo, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Is Discover Alexandria: Day Trip from Cairo suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 7-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Discover Alexandria: Day Trip from Cairo?
+
Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Cairo can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Cairo and add a light layer if any part of the 7-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

What are the best things to do in Cairo?
+
On Outty we rank every Cairo experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include All-in-One Giza Tour, inside Pyramid, sphinx, Camel ride & lunch, VIP Private Giza Pyramids, Sphinx Tour –Inside the Pyramids&More, Best of Cairo Private Giza Pyramids, Sphinx and Grand Museum Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Cairo?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Cairo?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
