I would rate Mongena Game Reserve, Gauteng, South Africa at 3 Star. Not worth the money spend.
My family and I went of an overnight stay at Mongena Game Reserve this week. I would like to share our experience starting with the positive comments. We had an excellent ranger name Dafnika Ndlovu. On our very first game drive we saw 4 of the 5 big five. Dafnika was kind, helpful and friendly gentleman with wealth of knowledge about the game and birds and the fauna. I had two elderly people in my group who were well looked after by Dafnika. We had gone on two game drives and a sunset boat cruise, and saw lots of animals and birds. The restaurant at the lodge had decent food and the staff was friendly and helpful. However, our stay at the lodge was not pleasant at all. The receptionist was a trainee who did not have any clue as to how to treat or handle customer request/ issues. There should have been a trained staff member with the trainee to train her properly. We had three rooms. In one room there were wasps and cockroaches in the indoor shower. The room was cleaned just before we checked in, so I am wondering about the efficiency of the staff. In the second room, the air-conditioning was turned on but there was hardly any cold air blowing on one of the hottest day in Gauteng. When the maintenance came, we were told that because it was very hot outside that is why the room could not get any cold. At reception we were told that there will be water bottles in the fridge when we check-in but there were non in all three rooms. Upon calling the reception, they 2 hours later sent all the bottles to one room, stating that no none was at the other rooms, while we were in our room awake all the time. The rooms are not renovated, air-condition is a very old model, the shower was not functioning properly. All in all the rooms were more of a 3 star hotel then 4 star as claimed. I would advise that before you book please inquire thoroughly or just go for the day visit or better yet go to neighboring game reserves which may be better.
