Journey through time to post-WWII East Germany with an eye-opening visit to the DDR museum in Berlin. Make your way to the museum located in central Berlin at the banks of the river Spree and head straight inside with your skip the line entrance ticket. Upon entering, assume the role of a Berliner in the unique socialist era of 1949 to 1989, and head to the first of many elaborate exhibition spaces to witness life behind the ‘Iron Curtain.’ The original sights and smells of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) will capture you as you wander into various replica spaces such as a perfectly reconstructed East German living room. Having a peek inside the original ‘Carat’ living room cupboard, check out the authentic kitchen appliances, and catch a few minutes of programming and propaganda on East German TV. Continue to the popular Trabant car exhibition and learn about this standard vehicle of the ‘Eastern Bloc.’ Climb aboard and travel back to the streets of East Berlin with films of everyday scenes and a virtual tour through a GDR housing estate. Explore the museum at your own pace, learning about the Socialist Union Party and engaging in engrossing displays such as voting in a GDR election. At the end of your tour, exit the exhibition through the sobering hole in the Berlin Wall.

Worth a hour or so
Decent experience, lay out is interesting, lots to see, the DDr layout rooms are really good to look round, the exhibits are informative but some are a tad repetitive, the idea of opening drawers and doors to info is different, but when it's busy sometimes doesn't really work as you find yourself waiting or having to skip bits round people. Well priced and interesting tho!

Quite busy so difficult...
Quite busy so difficult to use a lot of the interactive things. The interactivity was mostly pulling out drawers/ opening cupboards. The information was good and lots of information well put together. Enjoyed the short simulator drive in the car. Lots of exhibits but almost too much and too crammed together.

DDR Museum--a must!
Great museum! Lots of hands-on exhibits. Gives you a feeling for what life was like under communism. There is even an apartment set up! The only criticism is that the building is too small and exhibits are too close together, but I loved it!

Interesting for a history nerd
Whilst on a family holiday, I took the chance to visit this museum by myself. I am a big fan of DDR history and culture since studying at university and am interested in how the Germans remember their own history. With friends who lived in the DDR, I wanted to see how this came to life. It was busy on the Monday afternoon that I went which proved a bit of an issue getting to see exhibits at moments. The museum isn't a box room but it could do with being a little bit bigger than it is. The layout is not the most intuitive once you get past the section on the initial formation of the country. What is there however is good, interactive and gives a good overview of not just the basics but how the country worked, the structure of society as well as the unpleasant aspects of a dictatorship and the day to day life. The setup of a common family flat was particularly interesting. A lot of the exhibits and interactive elements have English and German options. I'd likely take my family next time so they can see it but I'd likely consider a morning rather than the afternoon.

Behind the Iron Curtain
The wall came down on my 21st birthday, so growing up, Germany was divided. I never thought in my youth I would actually be able to visit Berlin because of this. This is one of the best museums I’ve ever visited! Gives an excellent view of life behind the iron curtain! Don’t yourself a favor: make time for this if you’re visiting Berlin!!
