Bowing Deer, Torii Gates, and the Perfect Guide

Our day exploring Nara and Kyoto with our guide, Mai, was extraordinary—one of those rare travel experiences that stays with you long after it’s over. Mai is truly a lovely guide: warm, patient, intuitive, and deeply knowledgeable about both the ancient history and living culture of the region. In Nara, her expertise shone immediately. She shared the city’s long spiritual lineage, the stories behind its temple, and the significance of its traditions with clarity and enthusiasm. One of the absolute highlights was our interaction with the bowing deer—an experience that brought us great joy and created lasting memories. Her knowledge of Kyoto, especially the iconic Fushimi Inari Shrine, was just as impressive. As we walked through the endless vermilion torii gates, she shared the shrine’s origins, the meaning of the fox guardians, and the rituals practiced by visitors. She had a gift for knowing when to pause, when to explain, and when to simply let us absorb the beauty around us. What touched us most was the time and attention she gave to my niece. My niece has a deep interest in Japanese culture, and Mai recognized that immediately. She answered every question thoughtfully, shared additional stories just for her, and encouraged her curiosity in a way that felt both kind and genuine. Seeing my niece so engaged and inspired throughout the day was one of the greatest joys of our trip. And then there were the photos and video—absolutely incredible. Mai captured our activities throughout the day giving us images and footage that we will treasure forever. She caught candid moments, beautiful angles, and the quiet joy of experiencing Japan together. Her talent behind the camera was an unexpected gift, and we are so grateful for the care she put into it. We cannot recommend Mai highly enough. She is knowledgeable, gracious, and truly delightful to spend time with. Our day with her in Nara and Kyoto—bowing deer, torii gates, laughter, learning, and all—will stay with us always. She is now like family!

Response from the operator: Thank you very much for your incredibly kind and thoughtful review! We are truly honored to receive such wonderful feedback. It means so much to us to know that your day in Nara and Kyoto with Mai became one of the most memorable experiences of your trip. We're happy that you enjoyed meeting Nara's famous bowing deer, discovering the beauty and history of Todaiji Temple and Fushimi Inari Shrine, and learning more about Japan's culture and traditions. It's especially heartwarming to hear that your niece's curiosity and enthusiasm for Japanese culture made the experience even more meaningful, and that Mai was able to encourage and share that passion with her. Our goal is not simply to take our guests from one sightseeing spot to another, but to create meaningful experiences that become lasting memories for a lifetime. Knowing that you were able to connect with Japan's culture and history, and that Mai could play a part in creating such special memories for you and your family, truly means the world to us. We're also so happy to know that the photos and videos Mai captured will serve as lasting memories of your journey. Hearing that you could relive those joyful moments together on the way back truly made us smile. Thank you again for your generous recommendation and for choosing us to be part of your journey. We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you and your family back to Japan again someday. Best regards, Saaya MY Travel Consulting Inc.

Nara and Kyoto

What can I say about Maru other than she is simply an amazing tour guide but quickly became apart of our family. Our trip got off to a bad start with the typhoon wrecking some of our plans. But Maru stepped up and our one day tour of Tokyo with her helped get the trip back on track. And when our trip to Okinawa got cancelled because of the weather Maru stepped up and helped us plan several day trips one of which she accompanied us to Kyoto and Nara. She was so thoughtful and gave us amazing historical facts about each location. We booked other trips through get your guide and viator and those “tour guides” were simply car drivers that just dropped us off at the locations with instructions when to be back. Again I cannot recommend Maru enough as a tour guide. She was simply the best

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your wonderful review. A day trip covering both Nara and Kyoto from Tokyo is certainly a full and memorable adventure, and we’re happy to hear that Maru was able to help make your trip special despite the unexpected challenges along the way. Thank you again for choosing our company. It was truly our pleasure to be part of your journey, and we hope to have the opportunity to assist you with another unforgettable trip to Japan in the future. Warm regards, Best regards, Saaya My Travel Consulting Inc.

Day Trip Nara and Kyoto Private Tour from Tokyo by Bullet Train: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Tokyo.

How much does Day Trip Nara and Kyoto Private Tour from Tokyo by Bullet Train cost?

+

Prices start at $200 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Tokyo usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Day Trip Nara and Kyoto Private Tour from Tokyo by Bullet Train take?

+

Plan for about 13 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Tokyo is not rushed.

Is Day Trip Nara and Kyoto Private Tour from Tokyo by Bullet Train worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 64 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 2 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Tokyo, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Day Trip Nara and Kyoto Private Tour from Tokyo by Bullet Train?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Day Trip Nara and Kyoto Private Tour from Tokyo by Bullet Train suitable for kids and families?

+

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 13-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Day Trip Nara and Kyoto Private Tour from Tokyo by Bullet Train?

+

Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Tokyo can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Tokyo and add a light layer if any part of the 13-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Day Trip Nara and Kyoto Private Tour from Tokyo by Bullet Train start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Tokyo within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Tokyo?

+

Tokyo is less a city than a stack of neighborhoods with completely different opening hours. A guided food crawl through Shinjuku's Omoide Yokocho gets you past the no-tourist curtains, while the day trips west to Hakone and Fuji need an early start to be worth the fare. Our ranking weighs guide quality heavily here, because in Tokyo the guide is the product. On Outty we rank every Tokyo experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Tokyo Shinjuku Chopsticks Making Class, Tokyo : Asakusa Chopsticks Making Class, Shinjuku Night Food and Bar Crawl. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Tokyo?

+

Late March to May for blossom, October to November for clear Fuji views. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Tokyo?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
