The old Tallinn worth the trip despite ticket problem

Viator sent faulty instructions about the voucher/ticket process (see below). Very distressing to find nothing at the address given as the Ticket redemption point. I ended up walking to West Terminal where the ticket office found my booking using my passport number, and printed me a ticket. At the same time I also received notices from Viator that my ticket, not a voucher, was included. All very confusing. I will not use Viator again. The tour was good but lasted about only 2hours. I also think the pick-up time in Tallinn for the ferry back to Helsinki is a good 30 minutes too early. This was the message sent: “ How to get there Ticket redemption point Please present this voucher at the redemption point in advance of your tour/activity to exchange it for your entry ticket. Iyynenmerenkatu 11, Iyynenmerenkatu 11, 00220 Helsinki, Finland Meeting Point West Terminal 2, Iyynenmerenkatu 14, 00180 Helsinki, Finland Please come to the Terminal in Helsinki port at 8.00. Ferry departure from Helsinki 9.00 am, end of check-in 8.30am. Guide meeting you in Tallinn port terminal A, inside the building before the exit door, guide holding the sign with your name. ferry from Tallinn 6.30pm end of boarding 6.00pm.”

Response from the operator: Thank you very much for taking the time to share your feedback. We would just like to clarify a few points, as this information may also be useful for future guests. The ferry tickets we sent were already fully valid and ready to use, so there was no need to exchange them at the port. Detailed instructions were sent both to the email address provided with the booking and via WhatsApp. Had these messages been seen before departure, the process would have been very simple: arrive at the port, scan the tickets at the gate, travel to Tallinn, and meet the guide on arrival. We completely understand that on a travel day messages can sometimes be overlooked, which may have caused the confusion. We would also like to clarify the duration of the tour. The ferry arrived in Tallinn at approximately 11:15, when the guide met the group, and the tour finished at approximately 14:15. The total service time therefore included the meeting with the guide and the transfer, and was approximately three hours rather than two. Regarding the return transfer, we deliberately allow some extra time before the ferry departure. Our priority is to make sure that no guest risks missing the ferry back to Helsinki. For many travellers this could also affect onward flights or other travel plans. We therefore believe it is much better to arrive at the port 20 minutes earlier than necessary than to create unnecessary stress or risk missing the departure. We are sorry that there was some misunderstanding, but we hope this explanation helps to clarify how the service was organised and why the timings were planned in this way. Best regards, Dmitry

A day trip to Tallinn.

Small group tour of Tallin old town. Very knowledgeable and friendly guide. The pace was good with ample free time for lunch and to explore and shop. An enjoyable day trip from Helsinki.

Adventurous day trip to a beautiful and historic city.

Talinn is lovely, and definitely worth the investment of a long day. But be advised that it involves a lot of walking over rough cobblestone and some steep stairs. Be sure to make return dinner reservations on your way over.

I would just like to clarify the amount of walking and the stairs for future guests reading this review. The bus takes guests almost all the way to the Upper Town, so there is no long uphill walk. The route includes only one staircase of approximately 50 metres, leading down from the Upper Town to the Lower Town. The total walking distance is approximately one mile, or around two kilometres, spread over about two and a half hours. It is not a continuous walk: the guide makes frequent stops along the way, and there are many benches and places to rest. Tallinn Old Town is historic, and many of its streets are paved with cobblestones. They have been this way for centuries and are simply part of the character of the medieval Old Town. Of course, everyone’s level of mobility is different, and what feels easy for one guest may be more demanding for another. We simply recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, as this makes the tour much easier and more enjoyable. An adventurous day trip

This trip is wonderful, but be prepared for physical challenges in touring the steep cobblestone alleys of Old Town Tallin and negotiating the crowded ferries. Not a trip for the faint of heart.

I would just like to point out that everyone’s physical abilities and level of fitness are different. The ferry is a very large passenger ship, with plenty of places to sit and relax. For example, you can sit in one of the cafés, order a coffee, and normally find a comfortable place away from the crowds. As for the steep cobblestone streets, our transfer from the port takes guests directly to the Upper Old Town. From there, the tour follows streets with only a gentle slope, mostly downhill, so there is no need to walk uphill. This is a long day but...

This is a long day but the guide made it worthwhile with her knowledge of the city of Tallin and Estonia in general. The small group of six made it easy to move around.
