The Hanging Church
The Hanging Church is named for its location above a gatehouse of Babylon Fortress, the Roman fortress in Coptic Cairo (Old Cairo); its nave is suspended over a passage.[2] The church is approached by twenty-nine steps; early travelers to Cairo dubbed it "the Staircase Church".[2] The land surface has risen by some six metres since the Roman period, so the Roman tower is mostly buried below ground, reducing the visual impact of the church's elevated position

Good summary of religious institutions in Old Cairo
We visited the Islamic area, Coptic area, Synagogue and Bazaar in Old Cairo. Our guide, Sayed Mahmoud, explained well about the history of the mosque. He also explained how the synagogue and the Coptic church relate to the design of the mosque. It was a good experience to visit the church where the Holy Family, including Jesus, reportedly lived. At the end of the tour, we were taken to Giza Sphinx Airport.

We loved touring Cairo. Our Guide, Ola, was a very well informed young lady who shared interesting facts, dates and intriguing information throughout our Tour. The old Churches are unique and a "Must See". Khan el Khalili is fascinating. The Synagogue was a first ever visit for us.. What an amazing history Egypt has. We highly recommend this Tour with the very lovely and patient Guide Ola. She is an expert photographer too. We returned with memories to cherish for a lifetime.
