What you'll see and do
Plaza Mayor
Step into the square where Madrid staged its most public reckonings! For centuries, Plaza Mayor doubled as courtroom and theater — Inquisition trials were held here, verdicts read aloud to crowds who came expecting spectacle as much as justice. Heretics, criminals, and the simply unlucky were paraded before thousands, and executions were treated less like punishment and more like entertainment, complete with vendors selling snacks to onlookers. Beneath the elegant arcades and painted facades you see today lies one of Europe's darkest stages, where fear was public policy and the line between law and cruelty blurred completely.
15 minutes here
This narrow, unassuming street hides some of Madrid's oldest ghost stories. Tucked into the medieval core of the city, Calle de la Sal has long been whispered about as a site of unsolved murders and restless spirits who never found peace. Locals for generations have claimed strange sounds and sudden chills along its shadowed stretch after dark. Walk its length and you'll understand why: tight, winding, and barely touched by streetlight, it feels like a piece of medieval Madrid that time — and perhaps a few souls — never quite left behind.
10 minutes here
Iglesia de San Gines
One of Madrid's oldest churches holds one of its grimmest legends: a murder committed at the altar itself, a violation so severe it's said to have cursed the ground. Since then, visitors and clergy alike have reported sightings of a headless phantom wandering the church's dim interior at night, unable — or unwilling — to leave the scene. Whether myth or memory, the story has clung to San Ginés for generations, turning a place of worship into one of the city's most enduringly paranormal locations.
Pass by without stopping
Puerta del Sol
Madrid's most famous square has witnessed more bloodshed than its cheerful crowds and street performers suggest. This is where political assassination plots were hatched and carried out, near where an assassin's bomb was thrown at a royal wedding procession in 1906, killing dozens of bystanders in an instant. Beneath the buzz of shoppers and tourists lies a square that has repeatedly been ground zero for Spain's most violent political turns — a reminder that Puerta del Sol's central role in Madrid life has always cut both ways.
15 minutes here
Plaza De Santa Ana
Once the beating heart of Spain's Golden Age, this plaza was as dangerous as it was artistic. Behind the charm of café terraces and street musicians lies a history of tavern brawls, jealous rivalries, and a creative scene fueled as much by ego and violence as by genius! Santa Ana's elegance today masks a past far rowdier than its postcard image suggests. Cervantes and his literary rivals frequented the taverns here, where wounded pride often escalated into drawn swords — duels between writers were not unheard of. Such a duel started Cervantes on a sometimes brutal and often fantastical journey, returning to Madrid to one day pen the masterpiece, Don Quixote.
10 minutes here
Congreso de Los Diputados
Spain's parliament building has been the backdrop for some of the country's most dramatic political violence — assassinations of statesmen, attempted coups, and power struggles that shaped the nation's fate. Most infamously, in 1981 armed officers stormed the chamber in a coup attempt broadcast live to a horrified nation. The building's grand neoclassical facade stands in stark contrast to the turmoil it has witnessed inside, a lasting symbol of how fragile political power in Madrid has often proven to be.
15 minutes here
Behind its stately walls, this palace was once the setting for scandals the nobility tried desperately to bury: forbidden romances between people who should never have met, whispered affairs, and at least one death attributed to poison rather than illness. As a symbol of aristocratic power, Buenavista also became a symbol of aristocratic secrecy — where reputation mattered more than truth, and the wealthy had both the means and the motive to make inconvenient problems quietly disappear.
10 minutes here
Palacio de Linares
Widely regarded as the most haunted building in all of Spain, Palacio de Linares carries a legend as dark as its opulence is grand. Family secrets — including whispers of a forbidden and scandalous marriage — are said to have doomed the household to generations of misfortune and restless spirits. Visitors and staff alike have long reported unexplained sounds and sightings within its walls. It's a fitting final stop: a palace built to showcase wealth and status, now better known for the ghosts that refuse to leave it behind.

A great alternative tour of hidden, sinister Madrid
This tour visits places that you would completely miss as a tourist, but have such cool history behind it. I was impressed by how many hidden locations, alleyways, and historic spots John brought us to; and he was such a great storyteller and answered all of our questions. His passion for local history made every stop interesting, you can really tell he loves and knows his city of Madrid and made me fall in love with it too! It’s informative, a little gruesome, and there were some really unexpected stories. Easily one of the most unique night activities I've ever done as a tourist.
Response from the operator: Thank you so much, Tahnee! We’re delighted to hear that you enjoyed discovering the hidden, darker side of Madrid with John. It’s wonderful to know that his storytelling, knowledge, and passion for the city brought those lesser-known alleyways, historic sites, and sinister stories to life. The Dark Side of Madrid: Ghosts, Executions & Murders Walking Tour is all about uncovering the unusual history that’s easy to miss on a typical visit, so we’re thrilled it gave you such a unique perspective on Madrid. We’ll be sure to share your kind words with John, especially your comments about his storytelling and enthusiasm. We hope you left Madrid with plenty of memorable stories—and perhaps a slightly different view of the city after dark! Karla | SANDEMANs Team

Don't Miss it! A really entertaining tour!
I don't usually do Ghost tours, but I am so glad I did! It really gave me a different view and experience of Madrid. John was a great guide, and it's not just cheap scares, he really goes into detail about the history behind different ghosts, murders and assassinations at the real sites. Dark Side of Madrid Ghosts Executions and Murders Walking Tour: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Madrid.
How much does Dark Side of Madrid Ghosts Executions and Murders Walking Tour cost?
+
Prices start at $26 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Madrid usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Dark Side of Madrid Ghosts Executions and Murders Walking Tour take?
+
Plan for about 2 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Madrid is not rushed.
Is Dark Side of Madrid Ghosts Executions and Murders Walking Tour worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 87 out of 100, which we label "Exceptional". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 413 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most highly reviewed in Madrid, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Dark Side of Madrid Ghosts Executions and Murders Walking Tour?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Dark Side of Madrid Ghosts Executions and Murders Walking Tour suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 2-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Dark Side of Madrid Ghosts Executions and Murders Walking Tour?
+
Around 145 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Madrid can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Madrid and add a light layer if any part of the 2-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Dark Side of Madrid Ghosts Executions and Murders Walking Tour start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Madrid within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Madrid?
+
On Outty we rank every Madrid experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Madrid Essential: Historic Center, Plaza Mayor & Royal Palace, Madrid Walking Tour from Puerta del Sol to Retiro Park, Madrid Oscuro: Torture, Ghosts, Crimes and Legends. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Madrid?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Madrid?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
