The Bandabuliya Municipal Market is located near the Selimiye Mosque. It was built between 1930 and 1932 during the British administration of the island. It is a covered market with a late Art Deco facade. Above the entrance is the inscription „Bandabuliya Pazari 1932“. It was the main covered market in the north of Nicosia. It was a traditional Turkish bazaar where you could find fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy products and household goods. It was not just a market. It was also a local meeting place. The market was renovated and re-opened in 2012. It now has over 70 stalls, cafes, bookshops and a small theatre. The stalls have returned along with craft and souvenir shops for visitors.

Anyone who wants to take a tour to Nicosia, the old town, with border crossing ... I would definitely recommend this tour. The whole tour was just perfect. I was picked up directly at my accommodation and delivered there again. The tour guide Jürgen was very nice, competent, accommodating,.... has completely responded to my wishes and ideas of the tour. Exploring something different so close.
Jürgen is a fascinating guide. He picked me up on time as agreed and we drove to Nicosia. First we had a good look at the old city wall from the “south” side and looked over the “no-man’s land” area before parking up and walking through the streets - eventually into the main shopping street. One part of this could be almost anywhere in a city - but then we cross Paphos Gate through into the Northern part (passport required!) and the difference is clear. We explored some fascinating areas - and discussed the history. I’m not a big shopper (but if you are there are plenty of fascinating shops) but that meant we had time to get some lunch and Jürgen knew a great place to go. Very glad to have done this - seen some great sights / sites and understood more about the recent history (something I remember from the news in my younger days). Thank you!
