    Negombo food experience

This shopping, cooking and dining tour was amazing After visiting a food market and other interesting stalls, we visited the family home where I helped Roch’s wonderful grandmother ( a little) with food preparation , and between the 2 of them I had a very interesting and fun and informative time, finishing off with a feast of delicious Sri Lankan dishes Thank you to Roch and his family A tour well worth doing 🤗

    Must do Negambo

A great way to dip into local Negambo life - from gathering produce in the local markets, to the laborious preparation of flavoursome tuna/ devilled prawn curry. Communication was excellent throughout & Shashi’s an excellent and knowledgeable host. Highly recommended.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your kind words! We’re really happy to hear that you enjoyed experiencing local life in Negombo, from the market visit to preparing the tuna and devilled prawn curry. It’s great to know that the communication and overall experience met your expectations. Shashi will be especially pleased to hear your compliments—he truly loves sharing his knowledge and passion with our guests. We really appreciate your recommendation and hope to welcome you again for another authentic Sri Lankan experience in the future! 😊

    Sri Lankan Home Cooking

I can highly recommend this experience. I really enjoyed firstly visiting the local market where fresh fish, vegetables and fruit were purchased before heading to a Sinhalese home to learn how to prepare an excellent meal involving multiple dishes. The food and the hospitality were first rate. I learnt so much from this knowledgeable local family. The trip also included pick up and drop off by tuktuk from my hotel.

Response from the operator: Thank you very much for your wonderful review and recommendation! We’re delighted to hear that you enjoyed the full experience—from visiting the local market to preparing a traditional meal in a Sinhalese home. It’s great to know that the food, hospitality, and hands-on learning made your time special. Our family truly enjoys sharing local knowledge, culture, and authentic cooking with our guests. We’re also glad the tuk-tuk pickup and drop-off made your journey comfortable and convenient. Thank you again for your kind words—we hope to welcome you back for another memorable experience in the future! 😊

Very nice cooking class at Shashi. Enjoyed shopping at the vegetable and fish market. Good explanation from Shashi. Then take Shashi home where his mother shows how to prepare 7 delicious curries. Participation is possible but limited by small cooktops in combination with complex recipe. Nevertheless, a lot of fun to do with this very involved family. Lunch was beyond delectable.l

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your lovely review! We’re very happy to hear that you enjoyed the cooking class, especially the visit to the vegetable and fish market and learning about our local ingredients. It’s great to know that Shashi’s explanations and his mother’s cooking made the experience special for you. We truly appreciate your kind understanding about the limited space in the kitchen—this is part of the authentic home experience, and we’re always doing our best to make it enjoyable for everyone. We’re especially glad you loved the lunch—nothing makes us happier than sharing our food with our guests! Thank you again for your kind words and for spending time with our family. We hope to welcome you again in the future! 😊

Learning to cook Sri Lankan rice and curry with Shashi and his wonderful family

Shashi is very welcoming and friendly, as well as very knowledgeable. The communication before the tour was very clear and reassuring. We were picked up promptly for a market tour (ingredients shopping and a little culture sharing along the way) and a couple of extra stops. We then went to his family home, where everyone was incredibly friendly and welcoming. We watched the cooking and participated at different points to produce an amazing meal which accommodated or family needs. It was by far the most delicious meal I've had in Sri Lanka. The fresh ingredients and quality of the cooking made all the difference. Huge amounts of food, incredible flavours. We are soooo much! Thank you so much, I definitely recommend this experience, very good with kids too. It felt like a day with family friends 🙏🏽✨ thank you so much!

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for this beautiful review! It truly means a lot to us to hear that you felt welcomed and comfortable from the very beginning. We’re so happy that you enjoyed the market visit, the cultural experience, and the time spent with our family at home. It’s especially wonderful to know that the meal was one of your favorites in Sri Lanka—that’s the biggest compliment we could receive! We always do our best to use fresh ingredients and share authentic flavors, so your kind words really mean a lot. We’re also glad the experience suited your family and that the kids enjoyed it too. Creating a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere is very important to us, and we love that it felt like spending time with friends. Thank you again for your recommendation and for being such lovely guests. You are always welcome back anytime!

How long does Cooking Class & Market Visit in Negombo With Pick Up & Drop off take?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 57 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.8/5 across 5 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Negombo, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Negombo and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

What are the best things to do in Negombo?

    +

The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Negombo?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Negombo?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
