The Hypogeum is a suggestive place, with narrow corridors and large blocks of travertine, where gladiators waited for the moment of glory. As you wander deep into its tunnels, you will almost hear the air resonate with their fierce battle cries, and the growls of the hungry animals ready to feast on their prey. The underground Colosseum was the behind-the-scenes of the deadly spectacles of the Flavian Amphitheatre. You will admire fragments of the original floor, the ancient drainage system, the rooms where gladiators waited to fight, the animals cages. You will see the reconstruction of an ancient lift which, anchored to a system of trapdoors above, connected the underground with the Arena floor, the central sand-covered wooden platform where the fights took place (‘arena’ was the Latin word for ‘sand’).

Terrible
Terrible experience. They cancelled our tour 2 days before we were to go. Naturally, at the last minute, we were unable to reschedule a tour. We came all the way from California to see the Colluseum. We made our reservations months in advance. This company ought to be banned from Viator.

Excellent tour! Highly recommend.
Sarah was phenomenal. She was so informative, was so gracious in letting us stand in the shade whenever possible, and was just a delight to be around. Trip cancelled 4 days before
Our tour of coliseum underground that we booked 4 months ago was canceled three days before. They offered us a replacement trip but with no transparency on relative prices. This appears to be a pattern with this company. Weirder our tour still showing available on trip advisor. Don’t book underground with them if you have your heart set on it.
